Can someone put the new version up for DL using http?
« on: February 21, 2002, 01:15:29 pm »

I'm behind a firewall, and FTP is blocked.  If someone could do this it would be great.  Thanks!

Well... it would work except that I'm in class.  I'm not one a computer that has access to e-mail except for hotmail.  All I need is a quick link so I can download it onto my Archos.  Thanks King!

On a related note, what would be the chances of changing the filename each time? IE has a nasty habit of caching the previous build. Also, you'd automatically have an archive if the current build didn't work on your system.

I already said the same thing, about 6 months ago.

I don't think they want to do that.

not sure why, maybe more work

Just ask again, nicely.  Sometimes take JimH awhile to turn around and listen carefully.

Where I live (high priced neighborhood) people give away their 'obsolete' 233 and 300 Mhz machines.  They actually put them out at the end of their driveways with the garbage.  I scoop them up in my broken down van so I can use them, one at a time, for each new download.  If anything crashes, or the registry gets corrupted, I can always go back to a previous version!  Only problem is even with the shelf in the garage, with its reinforced brackets, I am running out of room and the house is listing. I'd vote for less versions.  By the way, IMHO, anything more than 300Mhz for Internet access, or almost anything else, is not needed.

I have seen sites that provide links to other people's software with really out of date versions linked.  By keeping the same filename for every build, J River assures you will get the latest build when you download without having every referrer have to update their link address as frequently as J River releases new builds.

When I download a new build, I always right-click the link and use 'Save as...'; that way I can rename the file before the download starts.  I prefix the filename with the release date and the build number.  I think I have a copy of most releases since v7.0.160 RC2.

If you download from the website or from the link at the top of each Build announcement (same thing) instead of "Check for Updates" you can rename it and keep it. I have most versions starting from Version 5.? except for the Version 8 betas. I have some of those.

I do tend to archive the builds but I confess, I someetimes forget. They could copy the build to two places like

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox8_0_210.exe
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox8_beta_latest.exe for referrers.

Quite frankly, if you're referring people to MJ, you should either point them to 7.2, or to this forum for the beta. That way they'll know what they're getting themselves into.

Little sicret, you can use http://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox8.exe

It's not as fast as ftp protocol, but will do the job.
