Metadata for TV Recordings
« on: March 10, 2014, 06:31:08 pm »

How do I get JRiver to tag the Season and Episode into TV Recordings?  I see that field is empty on the recorded TV.  Is it not provided by the EPG?  I use just standard OTA HDTV, not cable.  If there is no way to get this info into the initial recording, how can I add it automatically later?  If I do it manually using TVDB then I can search for info, but I'd like it to do that automatically.

i just highlight all the files, open a tag action window, and put the series name and the season in the tag.

it pulls the rest(individual titles, etc) automatically.

Perhaps you meant to say "Make sure the Series name is in the Series tag, then add the Season and Episode tags"

If you want all the additional TV program data, you need to make sure that the Season and Episode numbers exist and are correct, in addition to the Series name. Otherwise when you right click on a file or group of files and select "Get Movie & TV Info", you will get the attached response. The Season and Episode numbers are not created by MC when recording TV, at least not for me in Australia with our EPG data.

Also check the Media Sub-type is "TV Show", which it should be for recordings done by MC.

Personally I don't worry about the Season or Episodes numbers too much for recorded TV, as a description of the program and other basic data IS provided by the EPG. In order to add the Season or Episodes numbers I would have to look up what they are online before I could enter them.

Also, rather than use the Action Window and add the data one recording at a time, I tend to look at the TV recording files under "Video/Files/[your directory name]/All Locations" and sort the files by Series/Season/Episode/Name then select a range of files and update the fields I want to in bulk, or one at a time. You can do this by right clicking on one of the files in the appropriate column and selecting "Rename", then entering the value you want to use. That will update the selected column for all selected files. For example, select all files from a series and bulk add "1" into the season field, if you know that they are all from season one.

I just find it easier and more visual to edit metadata that way.

Refer here for relevant comment and advice from the TV board:

It's a common issue that appears to be difficult to nail because, probably, there's no state, national or international standard on the subject.

Annoys the >pick expletive of choice< out of me because one of my local channels advertise this data on their website for promotion but don't include the data in the OTA EPG.  :P
Go figure.
