I 'd need to "almost clone" a complicated custom view I created.
I think the easiest way to do this could be editing the existing view, then saving with a different name; but I have this option only for default views.

Am I missing something, or is there another way to do it, without having to write from scratch the new view?

In Standard View, just drag the view on top of any folder group and you'll get two options, Move and Copy.
