The Mixer control is for PCM.
If pulseaudio is installed, it REMOVES the PCM mixer so you won't be able to use this System Volume mixer.

If someone has different ideas about this I'm listening.
I decided that MC should not try to mess with the Master mixer, only the PCM mixer for the current device it's playing back on.

Here's an idea regarding the issue when pulseaudio is installed; have MC default to internal volume when pulseaudio is installed? Would that work?

I think so. The time is probably when MC parses the device list on audio configuration.

Does this mean if people have pulse installed they miss certain functionality?

Certain distro's can't do without pulse.

pulse is designed to take over this functionality, but since MC doesn't support talking to pulse yet, you might indeed miss this functionality.

Thanks.

But, for me personally, I use internal volume so this doesn't affect me, is that correct?

Yeah, same here. I only use internal volume so that change probably wouldn't affect me either.

Correct. If you are using internal volume, it doesn't make any difference.
With pulse, you just need to use internal volume. No loss.

So, tried a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64, and ran into an issue...

Code: [Select]
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mediacenter19:
 mediacenter19 depends on libtasn1-3 (>= 2.13).

Usually sudo apt-get install -f takes care of this, but not this time...

Code: [Select]
Package libtasn1-3:i386 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libtasn1-3:i386' has no installation candidate

Ruh-oh! Looked into this more, found this here.

Code: [Select]
lp: #1303878: remove libtasn1-3 from trusty, replaced by libtasn1-6
Ah, there we go. MC will need to be updated to depend on libtasn1-6 instead of libtasn1-3.

Not sure anything can be done about this. Wheezy is still using 1-3 and it's required for libcurl.

It might require a separate .deb for Ubuntu/libtasn1-6 in this case.

EDIT: Fixed it myself by unpacking the .deb, editing the control file changing libtasn1-3 to libtasn1-6 and rebuilding the .deb file. Works fine now.

Hopefully there are no ABI incompatibilities.

In the meantime, I'm incorporating libcurl into the build which will eliminate about half of the dependencies including libtasn1.

Good idea! :) What would be remaining dependencies?

P.S. What was odd too, when I built the new .deb it was nearly half the size of the original! I opened both and verified all files were present. Weird, dpkg-deb must have some nifty compression!

Kind of unrelated, but just some quick feedback....been playing with Plasma-Next/Frameworks5 on openSuse (quite easy DM switching) and just did a quick and dirty run thru with MC.  It's quite well-behaved in terms of window sizing and moving, meaning everything is just really smooth.  Everything I tried (options, DSP, zone setup) seemed to work just fine (no big surprises, I guess).

libc6 (>= 2.13)

libssl1.0.0 (>= 1.0.1)
libasound2 (>= 1.0.25)
libuuid1 (>= 2.20.1)

libxcb1 (>= 1.8.1)
libxau6 (>= 1:1.0.7)
libxdmcp6 (>= 1:1.1.1)
libstdc++6 (>= 4.7.2)
zlib1g (>= 1.2.7)

Interesting about the size, are you sure you are getting all of the libraries in there?
Are you setting specific compress in dpkg-deb? I'm just using the defaults, nothing specified.

I'm testing it now. It seems OK. The trick with libcurl is to figure out what I need and what I don't need. If it breaks something I'm sure you all will let me know!

I've got another thought about the mixer. I'm wondering if instead of autodetecting it I just allow the setting of mixer number and device.
For example, the mixer number can be 0,1,2 and the device can be PCM or Master. I wasn't going to mess with the Master but for those people with pulse by default, the PCM mixer is useless. I suppose they can just use internal though...
The mixer number isn't necessarily in a one-to-one correspondence to the audio device hence the need to either detect it from the device or left the user specify it.

Thoughts??

I'm not sure ...

But I think the majority of people run pulse.

The PCM mixer is is the device that resamples all streams and mix them to simultaneously output different streams/programs right? I would think that most MediaCenter users don't want that or am I mistaken?

Yep, default settings and I double checked - all files/libraries were accounted for and the .deb was still nearly half the size (21MB vs 39MB). Very odd, maybe Ubuntu 14.04 has an updated/custom dpkg-deb or by default it uses another compress level? Not sure. Only command I used for the unpack/repack process was dpkg-deb with -x, -e and -b commands.

For the dependencies, the i386 builds are required for all of them, right?

Interesting.
I'll check the compression.
Yes, all library dependencies are i386.
The encoder stuff (lame, oggenc, etc) can be either.

From what I understood the PCM mixer is for PCM output devices which is what MC asks for when it enumerates the device list.
I think the Master mixer is more like what you describe though I could be wrong.
The disadvantage of using the pulse device is that (as far as I can see) it forces MC to only use one sample rate.

Nice, will revise my Ubuntu tutorial when the next build is out. :) Oh, In my experience getting pulse working adding libasound2-plugins might be wise as well.

No Sound on JRiver Media Center 19.0.128 for Debian
« Reply #23 on: April 18, 2014, 04:20:05 pm »

I have been unable to get any sound from my MJ19 for Linux. My computer is a new (Mid-Feb HP Envy 700-216 with Beatsaudio codec. The message I receive every time I try to play something is that "Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' using the format '44.1 kHz 2 channel." And suggests that I go to the DSP studio to select the proper output mode. I've tried virtually all of them with the same results and also gone to my audio hardware settings with no luck. Now my computer is connected from the sound card speaker (green) output to my NAD pre-amp and then through an Epicure amplifier to my selection of speakers.

My old MJ8 plays fine on my Windows partition.
Banshee, Youtube, HP player all play fine on Linux Mint Debian Edition.

MY QUESTION: What are the correct settings and where are they on MC19 and from the Linux sound hardware selection?

Thanks to y'all for reading my post and I hope you can help me.

The alsa pulse driver works (as long as you are willing to accept pulse's limited sample rate).
What does libasound2-plugins get one?

Make sure your user is in the "audio" group so that you can access the hardware devices.
Then check options->audio
Device = ALSA
Under device settings you pick the specific device. You'll need to look for your audio device there. It will be something like front: blah blah

@tlcmd:
Have you changed something on your system?
In this thread you say that everything runs

@ bob:
Have you changed anything on the graphics? The window is white during resizing. But otherwise it works (almost) perfectly.

Hi Bob,

by accident, I found the reason for my scrambled screen. MC doesn't like the animated cursor when you start a program. I had it set to "Bouncing Cursor". After disabling this option, the screen stays in order, even if I move around some other windows.

Did you notice the change from the test version 19.0.124-5 or the previous build 19.0.124?
Thanks!

That's quite interesting!
I wonder if the cursor animation is affecting the backing store I started using a few builds ago?
That could be a video driver bug.
The other possibility is the "revert to previous mouse cursor" after moving or resizing the window is messed up by that somehow.

What does libasound2-plugins get one?

Well...

Quote
- a52: S16 to A52 stream converter
- jack: play or capture via JACK
- oss: run native ALSA apps on OSS drivers
- pulse: play or capture via Pulse Audio
- lavcrate, samplerate and speexrate: rate converters
- upmix and vdownmix: convert from/to 2 and 4/6 channel streams

I always add this mainly for jack and pulse.

No - I mean this version. There were some updates from Debian - I do not know if it related to it. I installed 19.0.128 after the updates. It now works really well and fast. Without any flicker.

I know there are a fair number of people using jack.
The rest of the list doesn't really do anything for us. We do all of the resampling / downmixing if needed, we don't let the driver do any of this.

Oh, that's interesting. I wonder if it was a X server update for your video?

I think you might have nailed it.  I just upgraded to Mesa Git with the openSUSE pontostory repo (with a new X) and yes, MC moving and resizing is very smooth.  I thought it was the Plasma-Next, but it appears to be the new X(1.16git) with the appropriate video driver updates.

But 1.16 wouldn't come with a Debian update, so that can't be it I think?

I'm on 1.15.1 and I still get some flickering but its not jumping all over the place anymore. Resizing is still bad, it jumps around still.
