Debian help: Something went wrong With Playback
« on: April 29, 2014, 12:32:38 pm »

This solution worked on MC19.0.124-5 but not on 129-3.
Should I go back to MC19.0.124-5

I have just installed MC 19 129-3 for Linux onto a HP Envy 700 series computer running Linux Mint Debian Edition (Mate) 64 bit (semi-rolling Linux distro). I've tried about every setting I could find on both the computer hardware and DSP, but It will not play the sound. My speakers check out fine and my computer will play files from Banshee and youtube. I get the message that

"Something went wrong With Playback.
Details:
Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' using the format 44.1 KHz 2ch. The output may not be supported by your hardware. You can use the DSP studio to change the output to a compat1ble format.

Can I get some really simple instructions from someone as to how to start setting up and selecting the DSP and/or my sound card hardware. I am using this computer to play through my stereo sound system from the speaker output on my sound card. I can supply more info if needed.

Thank you,

If no one else replies, I'll write something up for you tonight. I'm going out in a bit.

Before trying to get MediaCenter to play, let's see from which device we can create sound.

Open a terminal/console, and type:
Code: [Select]
aplay -L
This will output a list of audio devices, please copy/paste the output here. It will look something like this:

Code: [Select]
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
    PulseAudio Sound Server
default:CARD=ST
    Xonar ST, Multichannel
    Default Audio Device
sysdefault:CARD=ST
    Xonar ST, Multichannel
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=ST,DEV=0
    Xonar ST, Multichannel
    Front speakers

Next, test the output of the devices with the following command:
Code: [Select]
speaker-test default -c 2
This will output pink noise first to the left channel, then to the right. Press CTRL-C to cancel testing.

You mentioned other applications can output sound, so I am assuming default is pointing to the correct audio device. You can check this from the output from aplay -L. default:CARD=something. Take note of something. Now, from the list, find an item that starts with front:CARD=something,DEV=0.

If you can find that, test it by issuing the following command:

Code: [Select]
speaker-test -D front -c 2
If this outputs sound, open MediaCenter. Go to Tools/Options. Under Audio Device, make sure ALSA is selected (the only other choice is NULL output which wont output anything). Below that under Device Settings, open Device and select the same device we tested: 'front:CARD=something,DEV=0'.

Open DSP Studio. For now make sure you deselect everything on the left side. Close DSP Studio.

Try to play something regular, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, no fancy hi-res for now just CD quality, mp3 would be fine too.

Let me know how that goes and we will continue tomorrow. I'm off to bed :P.

Interestingly, when my playback is set to ALSA on 129-3, I get the grey box telling me to go to set to ALSA and DSP to change settings. If I switch from ALSA to Null Output (These are my only 2 options), the player begins to play, but no sound. The play time runs and the two bars on either side in the song title box at the top of the screen indicate sound and change. SO it appears my player is playing, but only when the "null Output" rather than ALSA is the setting.
Ain't that weird??
So, how do I find the correct mode as instructed by the "SOMETHING WILL NOT PLAY"  box.
As pointed out earlier, both Banshee which comes pre-installed in LMDE and youtube will play on this operating system. What kind of other info would anyone like?
Thanks,

Sorry for the delay. We here in piedmont North Carolina are under a severe storm watch, so I may have to sign off rather suddenly.

Sorry, but I'm not particularly computer literate, so I have to do this step by step. I am getting white sound alternating between the L& R speakers.

dick@library ~ $ aplay -L

sysdefault:CARD=Generic

THANK YOU. It plays. I'm not sure what I did, but being married 50+ years to the same lady did teach me, finally, how to follow directions.

What's next?

WIth my appreciation,

Does

Code: [Select]
speaker-test front -c 2
play white noise as well?

Under Tools/Options, open device settings. What is Device currently set to? If the command above plays white noise, you should find "front:CARD=generic,DEV=0" in that list and select it.

Inflatable Mouse,
I think our posts have gotten out of sync. Thanks to you, my MC19 plays correctly on Linux Mint Debian Edition and all the DSP settings that I need work. And, yes, it did play white noise alternating between speakers. Now I need to edit my genre playlists which I believe I can do. But will post when i ned more help, and I know I will.
Thanks to you and also MrC for all your help with MC19.
This forum is a fantastic resource.
