PDFs in Media Center for Mac
« on: May 07, 2014, 04:56:19 am »

Is there a way to view PDFs within Media Center 19 for Mac?

I did a search for "pdf" but got zero results, so I don't think this question has been asked before, but if it has, please let me know where/when.

Thanks!

No, MC doesn't "read" the PDFs and is not a PDF viewer.

I think the OP has another post asking about PDF liner notes.  It is in the MC18 Windows forum.

Yes, I posted it in the wrong forum after doing a search for "PDF" which included all forums. Sorry about that.

Anyway, the reason I asked is because I found this page in the Wiki:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/PDF

which states: "JRiver Media Center can manage PDF files. Under Tools/Options/General/Features make sure that "Data Support" is enabled. Then any data files (DOC, for example) will appear in the tree on the left under Data.

Under Filetypes, PDF files are under Data/Acrobat Reader."

I'm now assuming that refers to a Windows version.

PDFs can be viewed in iTunes, so I was hoping the same goes for Media Center. Apparently not, even though there is a check box to include them when importing data. I'm not sure what the point of that is, since they're useless once imported.

Sorry for any confusion.

MC for Windows can import and manage PDFs, though not view directly.  When you "play" a PDF in MC for Windows, they launch in your system's currently assigned default PDF viewer.

MC for Mac is audio only, and while the Library can technically contain PDFs, just like Windows, they're hidden from view when imported (and the UI provides no simple means by which to import them).  I hope that at some point they'll enable the same option on OSX (that file types MC can't play, it can still show and manage, and launch in an external player when "played").  Matt expressed support for this idea in the past, but I'm not sure about a timeline (or even if such a thing will happen).
