I have searched the wiki and forum to find an answer without success.

My question is how does JRiver label the surround channels for a 7.1 system?

the surround channels are surround left, surround right, left back and right back.

using the audio calibration tool in jriver and set to 7.1 channels, it labels channels 5 and 6 as the surrounds for a 7.1 system. Does this mean left and right back?

If so, is the fact that channels 5 and 6 are set to left and right back (and not left and right surround as I would have expected) going to work correctly with 7.1 channel movie sound tracks?

7.1 audio calibration has 5/6 as rear left/right for me, and 7/8 as surround left/right, rear is back, obviously, and surround is side.

This is the proper order of channels for Windows Audio, back before sides.

You can confirm with a 7.1 channel position clip to check if all comes out the right channels, with this for example: http://files.1f0.de/samples/Surround_TrueHD_7.1.mkv
If the channel mapping is wrong, the airplane movement sounds rather weird - if its right, it should sound like its flying around you.

Note that they use a zero based index, whereas you and Hendrik are using a one based index...

I'm not sure that page is right, WAV clearly should have rears before sides, unlike the "Channel identification" table suggest, according to standard wave channel orderings:
