Could MC become a software-based sound device?
« on: June 08, 2014, 04:47:58 pm »

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been asked and answered numerous times in the past, but my search-fu is weak today so I'm going to ask again anyway...

Is it at all possible that JRiver could build a software driver that mimics a soundcard and funnels all PC audio through MC? Maybe this isn't even possible, but I was just finally getting around to experimenting with zones and thought how nice it would be if I could take advantage of MC's strengths in this area to derive the same kind of benefit from other audio programs that don't have this feature. You could just set your default playback device in Windows to be the JRiver sound device and then use MC's zones and DSP settings as you please. Obviously things like crossfading and volume leveling wouldn't work, but other DSP settings likely could.

So, is this feasible? Has it been discussed to death already?

This is in development in the skunk works department.  It will be public in a few months, probably.

Thank you Matt.  I've been waiting for an announcement like this ever since you dropped a subtle hint many months back about Loopback not being needed in the future.

Even better news is that you're getting healthy, back at work, and back to doing skunk works development.  Glad to read you are doing well.

Having MC capable of this task set would allow me to remove yet one more program from my PC. That is wonderful!

Can we just skip ahead a bit and get a J River Media Center OS to run a dedicated multimedia PC and leave the other programs out all together?
