Excessive CPU when recording TV
« on: June 10, 2014, 05:27:10 pm »

I noticed today that my CPU temp was a bit warm, and it turns out that while MC is recording a single show it is using almost 30% of my CPU.  I increased it to 3 shows, and it was at 79%...

This seems crazy to me, I have a 3.6 Ghz Haswell refresh i3 CPU...

Any ideas why the load is so high?

What version of MC are you using? Do you know which device was recording (Homeruns or Homerun Prime)? I had this issue a few versions ago.

Latest version...138, I think.

It was the prime that was recording.

I am using 135 right now because of another issue I am having, but I had this issue earlier this year and JRiver fixed it.  I don't know if something changed in 138 or not.  Have you tried rolling back a couple versions to see if it clears up?

This is certainly not normal.  Is your hard drive working properly?

It could be an antivirus problem.

I'm using the MS Defender (or whatever it's called - the one built in to Win 8.1).

I tried rolling back to build 135, but made no difference.

I have also discovered, that it only appears to happen on the Prime.  my 2 normal HDHomeRuns (OTA), don't exhibit this behavior.

I will test it on my AMD system and see what happens tonight.

It happens on my upstairs PC as well.  It is an AMD CPU with ATI graphics, so fairly different architecture.  The downstairs PC (intell) records to a USB3 drive, and the up stairs test was to a internal 3TB drive...

Does anyone else have a HDHomerun Prime they can test with?  I finally talked the wife into going back to MC and getting rid of WMC, and I really don't want to now go back to WMC!!!

To be clear, it appears to only happen when using the Prime, not my OTA tuners.

I have a prime and I haven't seen this, but I'm usually recording when I'm asleep.  I'll leave a hardware monitor up tonight and see what happens.

So I checked this morning, and I didn't see any unusual spikes in CPU usage.  It definitely uses some CPU during recording, though. I think my CPU peaked around 25% when recording two things at once.  My system is a 2600K i7 (JRmark around 4000) if that helps with troubleshooting.

FWIW I've noticed that if I leave the JRiver to do something processor intensive (video conversion, audio analysis, etc.) that any TV recordings taken while JRiver is still working on that other stuff come back kind of messed up (lots of hiccups, a/v sync is off, etc.).  So smooth TV recording with the Prime does seem to require a good bit more CPU than, say, audio playback (which is relatively smooth for me even when running torture test CPU benchmarks like Prime95)

The CPU usage for Prime and other similar devices (Ceton InfiniTV for example) is higher than that for ATSC and DVB tuners.  In my tests (with two computers of different specs) each recording would use up about 12% - 14% of CPU.

EDIT: It makes no sense talking about percent of CPU usage without the specs.  Here are mine:

Laptop: Intel Core i7-2630 QM 2.0 GHz, 4 GB Memory, 64 bit Windows 7; JRMark: 2898
Desktop: Intel Core i7-3770 3.4 GHz, 8 GB Memory, 64 bit Windows 7; JRMark: 4184

As stated earlier for me:

Intel Core i3 4350 3.6 Ghz CPU, 8 GB memory, 64 Bit Win 8.1, Intel HD4600 GPU
The other is AMD 3.0 Ghz 6 core CPU, 8 GB memory, 64 Bit Win 8.1, ATI 4670 GPU

I record in .ts format, however, I did some tests this morning with .jtv, and it didn't appear to make a difference...1 recording was 25-29%.

I wonder if Win 8.1 is to blame...

I have a prime at work, so I will install MC on my machine here (Intel based with NVidia GPU), and see how it performs.

Win 7, Intel Core 2 Quad, Nvidia GPU has the same issue.  So far, every PC I have tried has this issue.  All installed with the latest 138 build from scratch.

In an upcoming new build:

Optimized: MC uses significantly less CPU power when using CableCARD tuners (HDHomerun Prime, Ceton InfiniTV etc.).

Awesome!  Any idea when it will come out?  On Sunday I have lots of recordings that happen simultaneous in the evening, and it would be nice to have this fixed before then...

Please try this DLL with the latest build 141.

Soooooooooo much better...now when I record 3 programs, CPU is between 8-11%.  I had to reboot for MC to pick up the tuners after replacing the .dll though.  Just FYI for anyone else who tries.

Thanks for the quick fix!
