Album Artist (auto) assigning wrong value
« on: June 19, 2014, 11:00:19 pm »

Something I've noticed for a couple of albums is that Album Artist (auto) has assigned the wrong value.

Generally it does a very good job of getting everything correct, but for albums where every track has the same list of multiple artists, it's picking the first name as the Album Artist, rather than using (Multiple Artists)

E.g. if an album has all the tracks listed as:
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ

Then it should be listed under (Multiple Artists)
Instead, it's being listed under XXXXX

If I make a slight change to the artist order:
  • YYYYY; ZZZZZ; XXXXX
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX; YYYYY; ZZZZZ

Then the album is listed correctly under the (Multiple Artists) heading.

I know this is something which would be trivial for me to fix manually via the Album Artist tag, and normally you would only encounter artist listings like that when they are part of a specific group.
In this case, it was just a collaborative album, rather than a group with multiple releases.
I just thought it might be something you would want to address.

That said, I would rather take it in its current state where a listing such as:
  • XXXXX
  • XXXXX
  • XXXXX; YYYYY
  • XXXXX; ZZZZZ
  • XXXXX
  • XXXXX

Is correctly identified as being an album by XXXXX, if it ends up being a choice between one or the other.

The multiple artists issue comes up a great deal in classical music; often pieces arranged for four or five musicians will be recorded by four or five musicians who don't ordinarily work together (i.e. not a regular quartet).  Similarly opera always has a string of artists (the orchestra and the primary vocalists at least).

I can confirm that album artist does exactly what you describe for me with a serial list of artists.  I typically just put the "most important" artist first if I want it to show in album artist, or manually set the album artist tag.

I think I agree with you that it should probably at least show "multiple artists"

Next build:
Changed: Tracks with multiple artists will use (Multiple Artists) for Album Artist Auto.
