JRiver or laptop problem? (Resolved - bad external HD)

hi,

I have my music on 2 ext. hd's. (E: path WD drives.) The little lights flash when active. They work until I open JRiver. It will show the album covers for one second then they come up with those yellow boxes with red x's. The hd lights (both - tried exchanging usb cords) will then either stop flashing or just go out.

(I have Windows 7 and v.17)

What's up?

certainly not JRiver, it doesn't do anything with your drives until you force it to

you say they're WD drives...do they have WD Unlocker installed?  i have this on my 2 large WD backups, it locks the drives until you open them (it's for backup drives so you can't accidentally jack it up)

my only suggestion right now...

They were working perfectly for months. They just stopped working yesterday. I did change anything in the system at all.

MC will not affect the function of your drives.

Everyone should own a copy of HD Sentinel in my opinion.
It constantly monitors your disks and will warn you of problems as soon as they begin.
 
This early warning has saved my data a number of times over the last couple of years.

Well, it looks like there's a little trouble with the external. I'll take it to my local guys who easily rescued another external that I had.

This early warning has saved my data a number of times over the last couple of years.

Excellent suggestion!  Though I do daily backups on all filesystems and computers in the house, and separately, boot filesystem drives on my main server and Audio workstation, wouldn't you know that once a workstation drive failed mid-day, well after backups taking several hours of work with it.  This is a nice program and would seem to fill in some gaps that rigid backup schedules don't address.  I bought a Pro Family pack.  Very reasonable cost.

Bad drive. Talked with WD. Under 2 year warranty - getting a new one.

Another vote for HD Sentinel here.

I was going to use a software RAID in my HTPC. Looked at all the software available, and decided that there were just too many compromises and they made the HTPC too technically complex to just set and forget.

So I decided to just install HD Sentinel and have it keep an eye on the five disks in there. No backups, but no critical data on it either. I use HD Sentinel on my main PC as well, which has multiple scheduled backups running daily, and it gives me another level of confidence in the PC.
