iTunes track ratings / metadata, transfer to JRiver
« on: July 22, 2014, 04:19:07 pm »

I am a very long term iTunes user making the transition to JRiver.  My existing iTunes library works perfectly in JRiver, and those albums that had artwork in iTunes have artwork in JRiver etc.  The one issue that I have is with the user allocated track ratings.  A vast number of the tracks in my iTunes library are "rated" i.e. with one to five "stars".  However, in JRiver only about 30 tracks are indicated with ratings, in comparison to the many thousands as they appear in iTunes.

Is there an easy way to transfer the iTunes metadata for ratings so that it reads in JRiver?

One question:  The files are the same exact files on disk (not separate copies for MC vs. iTunes)?

If so, then there are a few possible solutions.  The easiest might be to use prod's MCiS to sync (just one time) between MC and iTunes.

I think MC can import playlists including metadata from iTunes directly as well, somehow, but I'm not well versed on this, and you might have to clear your MC Library and start over to use this (because once they're imported, then you won't be able to do it, I suspect).

More info about the latter option from people who do know about those options:

Yes, I am using the same library / hard disc location between JRiver and iTunes.  Looking at the links you provided, it looks like there is a plug-in, that effectively links JRiver to your iTunes library.  (Links it forever, as far as I can see)  It looks like this is what I need, although I have a few 24bit flac files that I'll need to add on top, which I guess shouldn't be an issue.  Next task, find this plug-in!

Thanks for the pointers, much appreciated.

It does do bi-directional sync of a bunch of useful metadata, including ratings.  It is not a "persistent link" however.  It syncs when you run it.  However, you can automate it with a little elbow grease.

Back when I last was using it, I had it scheduled to run automatically 3 times a day.  Worked quite well.
