Video in MC Mac 20?
« on: August 01, 2014, 09:04:48 am »

Will any video file functionality be added in MC 20 for Mac?  In my case, I'm not even talking about MadVR or Red October or any of that - just being able to catalog video files and relevant metadata so that I can use DLNA to send it to my Oppo blu ray player, and use JRemote to select films.

I think video playback (on the Mac itself) is the determining factor for whether I upgrade to MC20 or not, so it would be good to know if this is a planned feature.

To have the program only serve up files via DLNA doesn't seem like a big change.
I suspect that the reason it isn't in MC19 is because you can't add a video section to the program to manage these files and serve them up over DLNA without people expecting the option to play them on the Mac itself.

It's not possible to say when we'll have video working on the Mac until we have it.  We're working on it.

I understand that video support is a lot of work, since everything is DirectShow-based on Windows, and that doesn't exist on OS X.
While it may not be soon, is it targeted for release in MC20?

While different in scope, it seems like it would be more important than something like ripping/burning support, since Apple don't sell systems that have optical drives any more.

For Mac and (some) video formats, you'd probably have to tap into QuickTime, right? Or would it be an in-house solution?

I personally really don't use any video functionality of JRMP on Win and don't need video on OSX. I'd rather prefer putting time, effort and resources into improving OSX audio quality & performance.

IMHO, usability of video playback on large TVs, JRMP is simply not an option. Sorry ;-(

It seems like audio playback is almost at parity with the Windows version now.

Perhaps you should go into more detail about why you think that is the case. I strongly disagree.

I too would like to know this.  This was one of the primary reasons I didn't upgrade from MC18 for Mac to MC19 for Mac, and uninstalled MC18 all together, just using Web Gizmo now for audio playback on my Mac.

Thanks!

I use a headless Mac mini as the HTPC. My prefered video playback s/w is XBMC. It's GUI is more suitable to browse, play and control video on a large TV (without using another smart device). I've tried JRMP's Theatre View but I have found it's design on a large TV set awkward to use. Purely personal preference.

Thank you.  We're working on video.  It's a big project, so we can't promise anything yet.

I strongly prefer an "audiophile" audio-only version of JRiver, with no interference of video whatsoever.  ;D

You can disable features like video if you don't want to use them.
There is no "interference" though - adding video support has no effect on audio playback.

Thank you for the response.  I understand it's a big project.  I will say that I and likely many others would appreciate it if you could implement the library and DLNA portions of the video features first as I'm sure video playback on the Mac will take lots of work.

I suspect, from the early betas, that the Library support is already there, and simply disabled.  Not tested, of course, but that should run with the same exact code as the Windows version, so it is well-tested there (and conceptually no different than what we have already).
