As an aside, I've always found it fascinating that we didn't try to move time measurement to a decimal scale at the same time.  Why is time special?  The divisions of time are, of course, the most arbitrary things imaginable.  And, the modern time system is much newer than the other measurement systems (the origin of the real modern era really being spawned by the railroad), so you'd think there would have been a better opportunity to switch to a more sane system.

Why do we still have wacky 24-hour days, 60 minute hours, and 60 second minutes?

Because the Ancients got it right enough that it stuck?

Note that the system (apparently) had the number 10 at its core.

I've lived and worked in a few countries and from a Human experience found Celsius much preferable to Fahrenheit.  The one customary unit that I found still in common use in Metric Countries is Feet/Inches for discussing Human Height.  I'd argue that this is because the useful range is smaller than using CM, eg most people would fall into a 1 foot range broken into 12 sub units.  The same range in CM is 30 units.
* 5'4" = 163cm
* 6'4" = 193cm

Horse feathers.

:o  Please no! Ft/In are bad enough, but no one outside MN know our distances in Horse Feathers!

Thankfully, MC uses metric for Vol (instead of 11)!

I'm with 6233638 regarding this although I think British English should be renamed Genuine English and English renamed Lazy English.

Love it. Fits with the lazy man in the JRiver canoe?

As a citizen of 'irrelevant' Australia, I enthusiastically support metric availability, in whatever form, in MC.

Where do you live?  I can't think of an English speaking country that uses the metric system.

;D very funny !!! thanks made my day, now where is my 3/64th inch drill bit !!! An really miss AWG wire gauges - you know where the wire gets bigger, but the gauge is a smaller number. The metric system is sooo confusing.

Pints of beer, waist size in inches; and never could visualize breast measurements in centimeters, not to mention lyrics

"1meter 57, eyes of blue,
But oh what those 157 centimeters could do
Has anyone seen my gal"
just doesn't sound right

why should the US change  ;D

What's the heck around here in this topic ?
Imagine trying to switch from one currency to the other, from "old francs" to "new francs" to "Euros" within 50 years.
Don't blame the "metric system" on French, we are very flexible people  ;D

As a native American English speaker who has lived in a country using the metric system for the last year (and a few other times previously), I can tell you that the Metric system is WAY, WAY better in all respects.  Whether 0 Celsius is the freezing point of water, or not, who cares?  There are 100 divisions for all measurements.

500m = .5km  both are used here, and both are super easy to understand.  Yeah, it takes me a bit to 'translate' in my head to the distance I grew up with, but it's not that long before you just start thinking in metric.  The imperial system is much more difficult than it needs to be; really, 1 mile = 5280 feet?!?!  Stupid!!!!

As for temp, yeah, there are a few less gradations in temps that we normally talk about, and hearing that it's 25 degrees outside brings a thick jacket to mind before shorts, but it only takes a little bit to get used to the fact that 25 degrees is really comfortable.  Whether it's 77 degrees F or 77.5, whatever, the gradations are very sufficient for understanding how warm something is, once you get used to it.

I wish the US would just make the switch already, and start benefiting from the incredibly convenient metric system.

Oh, and MC can use it too, even if we have English set as the language :)

I agree completely, except in the narrow case of using Celsius for weather discussed above, which I'd call a wash (better in a few ways, worse in others).  As I said in the other thread Daydream linked to earlier...

We learn the Metric system and then we all go "Wow, this is so much better.  Why aren't we using this everywhere again?"  Teachers mumble something about winning WW2 and not having to listen to anyone else, even if they make sense and we don't.

As I said, I was mostly trying to get a rise out of the Europeans.   ;)

For those who have lived in far northern climates in winter, F and C are not that difference, as -40C = -40F. Both sound better than 233K or 420R.

Jim, are you fair dinkum? I can only think of one English speaking country that does not use metric. ie. the USA. We went metric in Australia about 40 years ago.

Nice, I, and many others, prefer using a english interface in all our programs even if our native language is not English, it greatly simplifies googling for solutions, and translations are seldom very good.

Great stuff. Kudos to you blokes for being so customer focussed. If I get tired of doing the conversion, I'll flick the switch. Thanks for giving us the option.

What will be the granularity in metric units for Room correction (speaker distance)? Currently it is about 6 inches (152.4mm).

0.1m granularity, so 10cm or 100mm.

Hey USians, do you see how neatly that works out.  ::)

I have never seen this speaker distance thingy.

But what about a slider bar?
Like the volume control, where you could set the distance.
It could then display inches and mm at the same time.

You may recall we (Americans) tried to switch to the metric system during the Carter administration. However, we were not smart enough to make the switch (as evidenced by our choice for President at the time) and gave up.

PS. I wasn't old enough to vote when Carter was elected.

The language menu should read "Imperial units" or "US customary units" rather than "English Measurement System" unless we are still in the 1800s.

I thought you used Imperial, but apparently you use the same names with slightly different values called "US customary units"?
I'm unclear on whether that is currently in use or not. The whole thing is ridiculous.

This old thread is silly.  In Room Correction, the speaker distances ought to be shown in metric units for all countries other than the US (no doubt there aren't too many MC users in Burma and Liberia).  Australia (as just an example) adopted SI units in 1970!  And imperial/metric usage has nothing to do with a country's main spoken language! ;D

Had to bump this.   We were talking about odd measurement systems and found this table showing the Barleycorn as a unit of measurement is alive and well (well mostly in the US)!
