Do they fill in when you resize the window?  That's the behavior I'm seeing (blank until resized)

When I try to resize the window (lower right corner), the window gets white and Debian freezes. The cursor retains its shape from resizing. There is no action possible. The only way: Press the the reset button and restart Debian.
Resizing with the menu in the task-bar goes well. Moving the window with the title bar is also good.
MC forgets the settings in DSP Studio.
Mini View:
If the mini-view window is not moved,
MC goes back to the original size of the standard-view.
when I move the mini-view window - no matter where -, MC forgets the size of the standard window.

openSUSE Factory KDE4.13.80 Mesa 10.2.5 Kernel 3.16

THe sizing/moving is working well here.  The window does go white when resizing but at least you get the visual cue.  No problems with dialogs as mentioned above.  Maximize/minmize working fine.  Moving the window works as expected, with or without "Alt".

Tested briefly with the Plasma5 stuff, same results there, fwiw.

I think I found something that might help with repro of the white window:

Im using the default skin (noire), on arch linux with xfce4.10, but I'm using openbox for my window manager.  When I switch my window manager back to xfwm4, that resolves the white window issue, so it seems to be related to openbox.  That means the problem would likely affect LXDE too.

I'm not having any problems with DSP studio FWIW

I have downgraded now to MC 19.0.156

The GPU lockup is bad. I assume that could cause the system to crash. I don't see how MC could lock up the GPU though. It's not even making use of the Direct Rendering interface.

I did some additional testing in re: white windows.  It seems to be exclusive to openbox.  I tested 1) XFCE without openbox, 2) XFCE with openbox, 3) Gnome 3, 4) LXDE (which uses openbox by default), and 5) openbox by itself.

2), 4), and 5) all had the white window problem.  1) and 3) worked as expected.  At first, I thought the issue might be related to desktop composition (openbox does not natively composite), but I installed a free-standing compositor (compton), and saw no change in behavior, so it may just be truly openbox-related.  Hope this helps narrow it down.

Also of note, when I ran the compositor in captive mode, starting JRiver threw a long series of errors, about twenty or thirty all in the same form :

There is still an issue with changing the window size with the mouse pointer when you are in the left, top or upper left borders.
The right, bottom and lower right seem to work as expected.
What happens when you are in the  left, top or upper left borders is that there is way more redrawing than necessary going on and I'd guess that's triggering the bug in your nouveau driver.

Update:
(Nouveau - driver) After a dist- upgrade, I installed 19.0.160 again.
Result: On the upper corners it is possible resizing the window. Moving the window with the tool-bar is also possible.
Lower corners -> no reaction.(cursor does not change)
all sides ----> no reaction (cursor does not change)

Then I installed the NVIDIA drivers 340.24

Whow !!   All corners (width and height) and the upper and lower sides can be used to resize the window. While resizing,the window gets white. When the action is finished, the window is immediately in the correct appearance. No black borders or similar.
