FILTERS FOR RECORDS & TAPES - PLEASE
« on: February 08, 2002, 03:51:35 am »

Greetings - I have been trying out Media Jukebox & am impressed except for the fact that the Media Editor has no Hiss / Pop / Scratch filters to enable you to clean up Vinyl Records & Tapes.

Will this be rectified in future Versions & if so, how long do we have to wait?

One other comment ... Posting a message like this on Interact is one thing, but how do we know if  anyone at Media Jukebox has seen it?   I feel it would be better to have both an Interact & a direct link to Media Jukebox & why not?  Or at least indicate via the reply in Interact that it is from someone at Media Jukebox.

Kindest Regards

Development staff of MJ reads these.  If you don't get an answer within a day, add a blank message to the thread to bring it back to the top.

Answers from other users are probably as reliable (or sometimes more so) than those from staff since they have a lot of experience.

No hiss and pop correction is available and I don't know if we will add it.

Thanks for your very, very speedy reply.  It seems very strange to me that you don't have Hiss / Pop / Scratch removal. If you did you would have vitually everything needed for Audio control in one very easy to use & good looking package. There are a number of other packages out there that provide it like e.g. Dart CD, Goldwave, Cooledit 2000, but all these require require you to purchase them as well.  It makes perfect sense to me to have everything you need in one package ... Why couldn't this be Media Jukebox?

I think it's because they don't have an infinite number of monkeys typing on an infinite number of typewriters.

Well why bother to completely reinvent the wheel ... Why not invite one of the programmes that specialise in this sort of thing e.g. Goldwave, Cooledit 2000 etc, etc to be an integral part of Media Jukebox.  There must be some way of linking up.

The benefits would be: You have a much more versatile & complete Audio Manager, they have their software out there in a big way & being used.  You put up your price a bit, with that money going to the Editing software designer OR you offer it as an optional extra & again the Editing software people should be happy with that.

In short there must be a way ... & surely your vision for Media Jukebox should be to kmake it the NUMBER ONE Audio Manager available.

I agree. Recording records and tapes is going to be an important part of my use of MJ. I would be willing to pay extra for such a feature.

Speaking of cleaning

Is there a program that will take a mp3 that maybe cut off to soon (missing last 5 seconds) and what you do have left, it will take maybe the last 5 seconds and reduce the volum so that it fades so it does not seem like it was cut off?

Speaking of cleaning and cutting off.

Is there a program that can actually scan a music file to see if it belongs to the rock, house, trance, rap, classical, 50's, or 60's category?

Or at least the slow, fast and mid-tempo category.

King - Acoustica has fade profiles that you can apply.  You still need to go mp3 to wave, then edit, then back to mp3, so it's certainly not automatic.

Yeah, maybe so. But it costs $50 and you have to register to download the demo.

Well OK, then.
Back on topic:
Hiss / Pop / Scratch filters would be a great idea. Apparently, they are not cheap. Maybe some sort of arrangement with Dart CD, Goldwave, Cooledit 2000 or Audio Cleaning Lab as a purchasable plug-in. Like with DFX. No need to raise the price of Media Jukebox for people who don't need that feature. But for those of us who need and/or want it ...

More or less on the same topic:

It would be extremely helpful for recording from outside sources if we could hear throughput. That would also serve to use MJ's magificent DSP capabilities to listen to records, tapes and other analog sources without recording. An important part of the PC/audio/video setup of the NEAR future.

Any further comments on this from the "POWERS THAT BE" ... ?

A "Real Time" Wave Editor plug in (as an additional purchase for those who NEED it, if need be) to properly handle Tape & Record cleaning.  Is there any real hope of this being a VERY WORTHWHILE, near future addition to Media Jukebox?

King,
For cleaning up tapes and LPs I currently use CoolEdit with the ClickFix plugin.
I am interested in the Audio Cleaning Lab - as I am always looking for improvements.
CoolEdit noise reduction needs to process a 1-2 second noise selection from the source and then subtracts that noise from the entire source.
The result is fairly descent, but can/does produce some 'burbling' - more or less depending on how much noise is subtracted. The Clickfix plugin is only for declicking LPs and works really well.
How does Audio Cleaning Lab reduce noise/hiss from tapes? And are the results similar to what I described concerning CoolEdit?

Not sure how it removes the click, it loads in the mp3, you click on the options you want it to clean it does it, and you save it

like i said it does a good job, i just don't like the interface, they could have made it easyer to understand

what they did was to make it look "cool" and i think the program fails on that part.

Seems to work OK on a first run (I just installed it). Pretty simple to use once you've poked around a little. No burbling or rumbling, but I found that maxing the various noise reduction tools produced rather high levels of muffling of the sound, and a bit of reverb. I'll be more conservative next time.

Curiously, the playback of the mp3 files from my drive were cleaner than an audio CD I just burned from them. The GUI didn't bother me; a bit glitzy, but functional enough.

I've tried a few Wave Correction programs, but keep coming back to Goldwave! I find it reasonably simple, pretty versatile & very effective.  Again you need to sample the quiet spaces from either the beginning or end of a song, copy that & then use that to automatically invert paste over the entire track to cancel the basic vinyl noise (& that's simply done in a couple of clicks). Then use the Pop/Click filter & then trim the ends off the track & that's basically it (if your record is in pretty good shape). If not you can actually get in & re-draw the waveform & individaully take out each pop etc if you're that dedicated. Two main prob's though - it doesn't work in real time, so you have to wait till it's done each thing before you can review the results. The other programs I tried that did have "real time editing" didn't do as good a job as Goldwave (sadly). The other prob is they often want twice as much (or much more in some cases) for their software than Media Jukebox.
