Is it HDMI out?
You may need to turn on the option in MC that prevents the hdmi from sleeping.
Search for hdmi in Options on the Id.

Note that if MC dies for any reason on the Id it will restart at the top of the next minute so you should not need to reboot.

I have HDMI out to emotiva xmc1 processor.  The box by, disable display from turning off (useful for HDMI connections), is checked.  Is there another setting for HDMI? Addition, when I looked at this with keyboard, mouse and monitor connected a saw the box checked.  After making a remote connection, VNC viewer, I see the, disable display from turning off, box not checked.  No idea why the setting changed unless is changes upon reboot.  I checked the box again through the VNC connection.

Thanks Bob, It looks like the disable display from turning off did the trick.  Been playing multichannel for about an hour without issue.

Edit - bump 6 days
Edit - I posted this five days ago and no answer.  So, is this the wrong place for my questions or what?  There is no customer service phone number and it would be nice to know what I'm getting into before spending $400.

My current setup looks like this - see pic.  Computer with MC DLNA enabled > sends music file to router via wireless connection > Router sends wireless to Sony SMP-n200 which renders the music > standard RCA audio jack output from Sony SMP-n200 to my Preamp.   Issues: Sony SMP is almost 20 years old but is still working OK and handles FLAC.  Backup is manual and not mirrored so if a drive failure, I have access to all files and can rebuild it but it is not simple.

Questions: I am looking at the JRiver ID 302 to replace the Sony in this setup.  Also, I am looking to transfer music files from my computer via the wireless router to the Id and store them there which creates an ongoing backup.  Then I would play the music from the JRiver Id to the preamp.  Is this a viable setup?

I don't see standard audio output jacks on the Id.  Can some kind of USB to RCA audio jack be used?  Or, something else?

Can the Id be connected to wirelessly out of the box?  Are there issues using with a computer on Windows and the Id being Linux?

Will I be able to create playlists on the windows version of MC on my computer and transfer to the Id?

Can the Id be controlled from a Windows 10 computer?  What is the best way to control the Id?  I have gizmo on my Android phone.

Am I thinking about how to do this correctly or is there a better way? For instance, while I don't really understand the whole idea of using MC as a server, maybe it is better to set either the Id or the computer as a server but I would still want to be able to push changes back and forth and not be stuck with a one-way street.

I would like to play directly from the Id to the preamp and avoid DLNA if possible because of the inherent issues I run into with router downtime, router not recognizing something, Ip's changing, other various issues those that have used DLNA know about.  But, I don't want to give up the ease of rating songs as they play, compiling and editing playlists on my computer, etc.

I know this is not the most concise or clear requirements doc and that is because my priorities are not super-delineated in my own mind.  In a way, I don't want to be too rigid because there may be ways to think about this I have not considered.  I just know that I like my current setup for many reasons, but, the limitations of DLNA and not having a mirrored backup are two things I would like to change/improve.

Yes, this setup would work. Just to be clear, the Id won't automatically back-up the audio files, but it will create library back-ups.

I don't see standard audio output jacks on the Id.  Can some kind of USB to RCA audio jack be used?  Or, something else?

The IdNUC support audio output via 3.5mm audio jack, optical mini (TOSLINK), USB, or HDMI.

Can the Id be connected to wirelessly out of the box?  Are there issues using with a computer on Windows and the Id being Linux?

Yes, the Id can be connected via WiFi. You can even use your phone to do this without needing to connect a monitor or keyboard/mouse.

There are no issues with different operating systems. The Windows instance of Media Center will see the Id as a DLNA zone.

Will I be able to create playlists on the windows version of MC on my computer and transfer to the Id?

Smartlists are probably the easiest to transfer, but you can create playlists on your Windows machine, export them and transfer them to the Id. However, non-smartlists rely on file paths, so when you transfer a playlists, the file paths need to match for the new location.

Can the Id be controlled from a Windows 10 computer?  What is the best way to control the Id?  I have gizmo on my Android phone.

If you want to control Media Center itself on the Id, the easiest way to do this from Windows is with Remote Desktop Connection, which Windows has built in. You just provide the IP address of the Id on your network and you can control it remotely. Otherwise, Gizmo can connect to it as well for playback control.

Am I thinking about how to do this correctly or is there a better way? This is more difficult to answer. Everyone is going to have their own setup the way they like it. You wouldn't be the first person to use an IdNUC as a media server though. It might be a bit much for only playing audio to a single device. You might be able to accomplish this with and IdPi and your music on an external hard drive.

I am considering going from MC on Win10 to the Id NUC 302.  My goal is to avoid having to update Windows so often. I am looking for stability.  I would just leave it on all the time and update the firmware and MC when required.

Today, MC is running on a micro PC, next to my Hegel H360 (with DAC), with flac files on an external USB drive.  No DLNA, no server-renderer setup, just a single autonomous PC.  I connect to it remotely with Team Viewer, or locally with a keyboard and the TV.  I would do the same with the Id.

Is the MC GUI on the Id 302 the same as for the Windows version?  If not, what are the main differences?

Any functionality missing in the Id (vs Windows)?

Also, are there any obvious drawbacks from using the Id vs Windows version?

Thanks in advance,

If you boot the Id into GUI mode or connect to it remotely, either with Remote Desktop or VNC, the Media Center GUI is the same.

The Id runs Media Center for Linux, so there are some features that are missing, like TV. Although TV for Linux is under development right now.

Also, are there any obvious drawbacks from using the Id vs Windows version?

Id updates lag behind other platform updates. Currently, the latest Media Center Id version is 26.0.37.

I need a bit of education.  I see the 3.5mm jack on the NUC7CJYH with the logos indicating it can do optical and this comment in the specs (Intel Web site): “7.1 digital; L+R+mic (F); L+R+TOSLINK (R)”.  I don’t understand how you can get an optical signal out of a 3.1mm jack just by using an adaptor cable.  I searched the Internet and only saw converter boxes for optical to analog.  That makes sense to me.

So, this jack can produce optical signals?  If someone can explain, or link to an article anywhere explaining this, it would be great.  I am scratching my head… 😊

Is it the same quality as if there was an actual TOSLINK port on the NUC?

It's s funny kind of combo 1/8" jack with analog wired and optical.
I use the optical out on my system at home.
This is the first example I could find:
https://www.amazon.com/Recoton-Fiber-Optic-Toslink-Adapter/dp/B0002MQGRM
There are a ton of different ones, I think I got mine at microcenter for a few bucks.

I found an explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOSLINK

"Mini-TOSLINK is a standardized optical fiber connector smaller than the standard square TOSLINK connector commonly used in larger consumer audio equipment. The plug is almost the same size and shape as the ubiquitous 3.5 mm stereo minijack. Adapters are available to connect a full-size TOSLINK plug to a mini-TOSLINK socket. Combined 3.5 mm jack and mini-TOSLINK sockets exist which can accept a 3.5 mm jack or a mini-TOSLINK plug; mini-TOSLINK plugs are made 0.5 mm longer than electrical jack plugs so that the latter are too short to touch and damage the LED of combined connectors. Many laptop computer and portable digital audio equipment models, such as the Google Chromecast Audio device[8][9] and Apple AirPort Express and iPod Hi-Fi, use these connectors that allow for the insertion of 3.5 mm analog (electrical) headphone output or microphone input or mini-TOSLINK digital (optical) output."

If I understand this well, the mini-TOSLINK connector (male) touches the LED situated at the end of the jack (female) and reads the light signal from the LED while a 3.1mm audio connector reads the electrical analog signal from the two cylindrical metal portions of the jack.  So, this is how this port can support two very different interfaces (analog/electric and digital/optical).  Brilliant!

What is the best/recommended way to get the audio output to a RCA audio jack so I can output to my preamp?  Would something like this work?  A 3.5 audio to RCA cable >>> https://www.amazon.com/Audiophiles-3-5mm-Auxiliary-SKW-Smartphones/dp/B073WQBXJX

Re: JRiver Id Questions?
« Reply #1165 on: June 22, 2020, 04:32:36 am »

Greetings!
I think I may have discovered that the Id is the answer to a problem I've been running in circles trying to solve. I'd like to verify this before purchasing, so I'll describe my setup and problem.

I have converted my SACD collection to .iso files, which are stored on a Mac Pro running MC25 on OSX Mojave. I would like to stream DSD to my audio system in another room in a way that preserves gapless playback of my mostly classical music collection. MC25 is configured to be a DLNA server, and can be found by both my processor (Yamaha CX-A5100) and my Blu-ray player (Oppo UDP-203).  But here are the problems that I have been running into:
  • The .iso albums will play fine in MC25, but they aren't recognized by either the Oppo or the Yamaha.
  • The .iso albums can be converted to individual .dsf tracks, but the Oppo and Yamaha don't do gapless playback of .dsf files.
    • And with my multichannel files, there is usually a deal-breaking popping sound at the end of one track and again at the beginning of the next.
    • Plus, the Yamaha doesn't do multichannel .dsf over DLNA.
  • The .iso albums can be converted to .dff albums, but the Oppo doesn't read the .cue files correctly and starts at the beginning of the album regardless of which "track" I select from the .cue file. Incidentally, the .cue file works fine in MC25 when I play on the local computer, but when I try to push to the Oppo from the computer or Panel, it's the same result of always playing the beginning of the album.
  • I may or may not get a different result if I connect the Oppo to my computer via SMB, but that's a moot point for me because Mac OSX Mojave does a different flavor of Samba than the Oppo and they won't communicate.
So after weeks of dead ends, the Id seems almost too good to be true.

Am I correct in my interpretation that if I hook the Id up to my Yamaha via HDMI and connect it to my library on my computer, I'll be able to just play the .iso files as-is and get gapless DSD with no additional conversions? If so, where do I sign? (That last part was rhetorical; I have read the Wiki and know how to order).

One last thing; I see that purchase of the Id comes with a license for MC (currently at 26) and I was planning to upgrade if I found that MC could be part of a solution to this mess. Is the included license for the all-platform version, so that I could also be running the most current version on my Mac? Or would I really need MC on my computer at that point?

Thanks!
-Brad

DSD won't work over HDMI from any computer, including an Id. The GPU's drivers on all platforms just simply don't support DSD at all, which would be needed to get it to output over HDMI from a computer (e.g. PCs, Macs, Raspberry Pis, NUCs, Ids, etc.).

DSD over HDMI does work when connecting something like a SACD-capable CD/DVD/Blu-ray player to a receiver though.

Well, crud.  I was afraid this was too good to be true. I am slowly coming to the realization that streaming my SACD collection via gapless DSD using my current equipment just isn't in the cards, and I should just stick to playing the physical discs. I do appreciate your help very much.

If you ripped them to dsf or dff you could play them gapless to an Id as a DLNA renderer with a USB DSD Dac. (Not an IdPi, there isn't enough power for multichannel there).
If you were using an Id as a MC client to a MC PC server (not DLNA Renderer) you could also play the ripped .iso's as well.
The iFi iDSD works well with MC.

Please pardon my ignorance on this, but what's the difference between my Mac Pro being a PC server and setting up DLNA on it with MC?

The stuff I've researched I feel like I'm competent to have a conversation about, but this part I'm new to. Also, I have started researching external DACs, and they all appear to have only stereo outputs, whether balanced or unbalanced. I feel like I'm missing something obvious here, but how will that get me multichannel audio?

Thank you for your help and your patience.

MC on your Mac can work as a DLNA server pushing material to your Id as a DLNA render (the Id appears in your Mac MC Zone list is Id-xxxxx unless you've renamed it).

MC on you Mac could also act as a library server. In this scenario MC on your Id would connect to the Mac as a MC client. It's a little bit different way of getting at the files on your MC Mac server which can offer somewhat more flexibility, especially when dealing with .iso files.

I actually haven't looked for a multichannel USB DSD Dac myself.

ID 300 SSD memory limitations at 26 GB.
I have tried to transfer my 56 GB music files to the ID 300, however, when around 26 GB has been loaded, the transfer process stops and errors come up. The albums are coming from my Windows computer (MC 26/27) ( - everything works perfectly there).

I have tried different transfer methods:  1) via USB hard drive, import, F6 move rename (tagging error);   2) via USB hard drive, import, F6 copy (no space left on the device); or    3) via local network shifting to the Windows library and import from that, import, F6 copy (no space left on the device);
That the memory really is exhausted is furthermore indicated by the observation that after stop of transfer I am not allowed to create new directories (no space left on the device). I have checked all root directories for any signs of unexpected fillings.

Entering the ROM  Bios only gives me data on the RAM, not on the SSD. Additionally, entering the command window in the Debian Linux (help command) does not indicate any command for testing the SSD.

I should be noted, that the albums successfully loaded onto the available 26 GB on the ID 300 are played perfectly. I hope that you can advice me on solving this difficulty.

The Id has 2 partitions, one is a system partition (30GB) and the other is a media partition (the rest of the ssd, in your case around 80GB) mounted on /export.
It sounds like you are copying to the system partition, you should not do that.
That space is designed for the system, MC's DB, thunbnails, temp files, etc.
Copying media to the Id is normally expected to be done over the network with SAMBA/CIFS to the InternalStorage share to the media folder (there is a readme in InternalStorage).
If you are copying from an external drive using F6 you should copy only to the /export/media folder (which is the one you see under InternalStorage).
Remove any files you've copied to the system partition and use the plan above.

Hello, just installed Id on a Pi.  I am only able to get audio output via HDMI.

I'm hoping to use USB to Benchmark DAC1.  I've been into the playback options in MC as well as the mixer and RPi controls.  THe Benchmark DAC is seen, but when I select it in the mixer I get message:  playback device does not have controls.  When I select it in MC playback, I get message that device cannot handle output.

Suggestions?

I assume you're using MC's Audio options for setup.

How is the DAC connected?  Is it known to work with Linux?

Yes, I am using MC Audio options.  When I try and select the DAC from the choices on the Device menu and then select music to play, I'm told Playback could not be started on the output "ALSA" using the format '44.1kHz 2xh'

In addition, when I connect to preamp via 3.5mm jack, no output.

Replying to a previous post seems the only way I can get the proverbial word in edgewise.  If I am out of line I am pretty sure I will be so informed.
I have MC 27 on my Windows 10 laptop.  It plays fine, but then, drivers for my equipment exists for Windows.  But, I just bought a NUC7 Id.  I was able to get all of my CDs moved over there via the Ethernet cable (my network), all the Menüs work well, and it is all really pretty when viewed on the monitor.
Trouble is, I cannot get sound out of the thing via USB - the same way you play with the Windows machine.  I have found a large listing of what look like drivers in the Id, but any I select will not work.
I am trying to send to a McIntosh MXA80 (same as MHA150).  This machine has a DAC in it, and I want to send from the Id the same way I send from the Windows 10 machine.

Suggestions?

Is the amplifier connect via USB?  If so, you just need to choose the right output device in Tools > Options > Audio.  Probably one of the Front choices.

Yes, the only connection between the Id and the “Mac” MXA80 is the USB cable (3.0 out of the Id stepped down to a 2.0.  I might mention the USB cable is first going into a ifi iPurifier “Audio Purifier” (anti-jitter), then into the back of the McIntosh.  (Could thatbe the problem?)

But the Mac takes the digital signal via USB, and sends it into the internal DAC then to the amplifier.

Same setup works with the Windows machine; not with the Id - thus far!
I really hope the Id will work; with the size of this thing and the controllability if the cellphone I will be in autonomous non-internet music playing heaven!  I will be able to take this thing anywhere, and when needed, hook it up to anything!

Did you try changing the audio device setting as I mentioned above?

Yes, I have done as you suggested, and I am getting output now - good!  There seem to be numerous McIntosh audio devices to choose from, each with different effects.  I need to choose the combination of device, with output that gets me good signal.  With some of the immediate choices in the list I have to turn up the gain to maximum, and I can barely hear it.  But, yes, I am getting output now.

JRiver is mentioned in the Owner’s Manual of the McIntosh unit; I wonder if they have one that they like the best.  I think I will ask them...

Do option 14 (the mixer) from your Id menu and see if the device has it's output set to maximum. MC will control the PCM volume as the system volume but some devices have other mixer controls that MC doesn't control.

I use the "Car Radio" buttons to play Radio Streams ( These are configured on my Windows Based library server.

I have 3 Pi Id's on my network and am using JRemote on an IPad, The IPad is connected to the Library server and the Id's appear as zones.
If I try and play the HLS streams to any of the Id's the streams falter and sometimes just stop completely, low bandwidth streams seem OK.

If I VNC into any of the Id's and hit the Car Radio buttons that are showing up on them (as they are connected as clients to the Library Server , the streams play perfectly.

What is the difference ? And how can I fix the problem?

The flow is very different, there are a few things that you might want to check.
On the server, what are the conversion settings for the DLNA server that's sending material to the IdPi's? Are you trying to convert URL's? What is the version of MC on the server?

On the IdPi's, is audio buffering to disk disabled in Media Network??

1 No Conversion

2 The Car Radio buttons were created by the Opening a URL, getting it playing then saving to a button.

3 That’s now the “ stable”  release of 27

4 yes buffering to disk is disabled....

Looking with VNC on a Pi whilst I try to play one of these it seems to open a string containing a *.wav file...

This used to work....I’m thinking it might be the 27 on the server?

Everything sounds good except for that .wav file. It sure sounds like that's converting. Can you check to make sure the associated DLNA controller for the zone on the server is the one you are expecting (if you have more than one DLNA server configured) and verify that one IS set to Original Format?
I assume of course that you are not running as a Library server client on the IdPi's.

Hi Bob,
Could you please clarify the last line of your message above?
I don’t use any of the Id’s as a library server. I only have one on my network which is a Windows box using an External NAS as the data storage.

AFAIK I have only two (DLNA) servers the second one is associated with one zone which is a Pure media player in one room I have on the media server associated that device with the specific (DLNA) server.

Everything I play to any of the Ids is normally played from JRemote on the iPads or JRemote 2 on the phone.
If I look at the Id I’m playing to, via VNC I always see that it is playing the file in the original format, as I have a lot of Hi Res music. So I’m sorta assuming that no conversion is taking place.

I'm thinking of gifting an Id to a friend but have a couple of questions.

He would use it strictly as a server/player directly connected to his DAC and access music from a USB connected SSD. No network connections required apart from Internet access when needed. I would set it up for him but I have never used a Linux-based operating system. I gather the operating system is called Samba.

He has an Emotiva Stealth DC1 stereo DAC and the manual says some Linux operating systems come with drivers "but you better check". It also states that it operates as a UAC2 audio device.

So, does Samba easily recognize and support a UAC2 audio device, or even better has someone actually used the emotiva stealth DAC with the Id?

I would like to purchase it in his name.

He has MC 26. Will he get MC 27 as part of the Id purchase?

Many thanks for any advice

David

The OS is Debian.  You only interact with it through our software.

The license is included and it updates to new versions when available, without charge.

It works with most DAC's.  There is a 30 day return policy.  We could loan one to the manufacturer if they want to test.

Does Debian come with USB audio class 2 drivers?

Does Debian come with USB audio class 2 drivers?

Further research seems to suggest the answer is unclear. A Linux distribution may support UAC2 but still not work with a specific DAC (?). From another forum
"According to kernel source linux is usb audio class 2 compliant. https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/sound/usb/format.c"

" one can't guarantee without a real test that some specific dac is working without any problems on linux on specific hardware."

   but this looks promising

"The one USB DAC I have used with Linux ran as class 2 compliant with no additional drivers. Emotiva Stealth DC-1."  It doesn't specify Debian but I suppose it's worth a try

It all depends on if the Linux kernel you're using. All the USB DACs I've used have worked out-of-the-box on Linux with ALSA.

Thanks for reply

I have not used Linux beforehand

Is this configurable within MC under tools > options >audio....much like choosing "ASIO" or "WASAPI" in windows?

Just choose your DAC under MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device. I'd recommend an output that uses hw: or front: as those will bypass the system mixer and whatever you do, do not use the pulse output as it resamples everything to 48 kHz.

By poring over everything I can find on the topic I have my Id up, running on Wi-Fi, controlled by JRemote, and life is good!

Now:
- How do I stream from my Id to my iphone using JRemote?
- Can one JRemote control multiple IDs?
- Is getting another JRemote for my iPad a separate $9.95 charge?
- Deleting items from Playlists wants to delete from entire library (or so the message says); is this so?

Look on your Id main menu. The access key will be there. Put it into JRemote and it should come right up.
You can control as many instances of MC Id or other with JRemote as you want.
JRemote is connected to your apple account. You can run it on multiple devices without another charge.
If you delete an item from a playlist and you are asked to delete it from the library, yes that is the case. What it sounds like to me it that you want to choose REMOVE instead of delete.

For streaming TO the phone just choose "This Device" as the zone in JRemote.
If your material consists of formats other than m4a, flac or mp3 you'll likely need to turn on transcoding for that server in JRemote's settings.
