Id play Cloudplay ?
« Reply #1200 on: November 27, 2020, 09:53:29 am »

Id as a standalone player for Cloudplay ?
Can I use Id without the PC in the mix ?   I can interact with Cloudplay from the PC,   but I was wondering if cloudplay will act as a source for the Id,  without use of the PC.
Looking for HD or better audio,  without win27 in the middle.

Yes, MC on the Id behaves just like MC on Windows, with minor exceptions.  Cloudplay works.

Hi All, I have my new IdPi running on a Raspi 4b 2GB w/Hifiberry DAC RCA hat, Raspberry Pi std 7" touch screen installed in a SmartPI Touch 2 case & a 4TB WD Gaming USB30 HDD attached that has my flac files. IDPI is connected via ethernet not WIFI. JRiver is running in audio only mode. I temporarily have a keyboard/mouse attached to the PI via a powered USB2.0 Hub.

My Goal is to use "unit" as a kiosk music player. Like going into a fast food restaurant and ordering up music on their "order kiosk." I'd like to be able to blast some tunes to whatever zone(s)/player(s) I choose when I walk in the house. I like that Theater mode is capable of showing artist photos as a song is playing.

I've been playing with the IDPI's settings mainmenu, Raspbian Toolbar Menu and Theater Mode, trying different things. The touch screen is only capable of 800x480 but I've set the screen size to default of 720x480, expanded the menu bars, and played with other settings via the 17 Custom RPi configuration selection in the mainmenu. I'm using the newer "fake GL" setting.

1. Is there documentation explaining the OS toolbar menu selections? Not sure what "head" or "alpha:255" or some of the "iconbar mode" selections mean.

2. Any recommendation for handling or using workspaces?

3. Can I change the location of the clock when I'm in Theater Mode with the Playing Now selection on screen? The clock covers the right side of the text bar. Even better, how much customization is available in the Theater Mode view?

4. Is there a way to calibrate the touchscreen? It's pretty accurate as it is but it might be helpful to load up a calibration utility for future use.

5. What's the recommended "quit playing tunes" procedure? While playing music, if I press back, Menu, Exit, then System Sleep, Shutdown... then Close Media Center, I get a white screen and then at the top of the minute, JRiver fires back up and the tunes start up with the last song that was playing. Should I use STOP via the Playing Now selection bar and then let the screen go blank after it times out? It's not like the Raspberry PI is using a lot of juice.

I'm thankful for the JRiver staff! Stay safe. Any guidance would be great.

The IdPi really isn't setup to run on a low resolution monitor, you are pretty much on your own with anything you do with that.

The preferred way of shutting down the IdPi is via the main menu shutdown option. The Theater View system shutdown isn't operable on linux based MC at this time.

Hi,

I am thinking of buying the iD with the HDD, which would cover storage issue, but I have some basic questions.
Will it work with the Qobuz desktop app?
Can it play internet radio?

Thanks,

Bob, I'm not intending to sound snarky, just trying to solve a problem and maybe help someone else. I'm not sure how the resolution of the screen has an impact on my questions. If I connected the IdPi to an 70" HD TV I'm guessing I'd have basically the same questions. Can I assume that the answers to #1, #2, #4 are no? As for #5 - If I'm playing music, what are the steps to get back to the main menu? I thought that's what I was attempting and I got a white, blank screen.

I'm not taking it that way so not a problem.
The desktop is a default fluxbox entry, we only added to the right click menu so anything you do with the fluxbox bar menu is going to be exploration. Option 77 should always wipe out those changes if you get stuck.
I don't know of any way to calibrate your touch screen.

Hello,

After many upgrades, I'm finally looking to retire my HTPC which has been running MC since v15!

I was going to replace it with a NAS but based on Jim's comments in this thread (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=110729.0), I'm looking at an Id NUC instead.

I currently use my HTPC to play MKV and FLAC files. The MKVs consist of mpeg-2 or mpeg-4 video (blu-ray quality), most of which have some kind of hi-res audio (Dolby ATMOS or DTS-MA). The MKVs are stored on an external USB drive connected to the HTPC via USB-3.

Can the Id NUC can play these files directly to a Sony A8H Series OLED Smart Android TV which is what my HTPC presently does?

Also, I think I read that the Id NUC does not support playing 4K video/audio files even if the TV supports those. Is that correct?

Thanks for your help!

Anyone?

I've been waiting to hear back from the moderators as well.  I have an Id NUC 300 (you can read back on the previous posts if you're interested in my experience).  Regarding your question on playback.  I just tried and was able to play a 1080p mkv on my Id NUC.  I also tried a 4K UHD Remux file and had some serious stuttering.  Maybe it could play other 4K files or with some software tinkering.  Also I don't think this version of the NUC can do HDR, so for 4K playback I'd look elsewhere.

Split TV, Receiver, and HDMI Problem (EDID)

This was originally posted by zimmy as an audio problem with the Id, but it is almost certainly a hardware EDID problem with the receiver and TV.  Other users suggested solutions.

Here goes, pardon my 'beginner' ignorance.
I use I-tunes (since 2004), into which I've 'ripped' ? (apple lossless ?) all of my CD's and bought 400-500 hundred tracks through the I-tunes store.  My current total library just under 70GB and I don't have plans to expand it too much.  I have a copy of everything stored on an old (120GB ?)  Apple TV with a 7" TV attached so I can see what's playing (I switch the track in play via the apple TV remote).
I use the unprocessed digital output of the Apple TV via optical cable (toslink)  to my DAC/integrated amplifier.
This is a 'stand alone' system which suits me, I don't need to operate my desktop computer to hear music, I don't need a 'network', everything is powered via a power cord (no batteries except in the remote)
Is JRiver for my desktop computer and an Id located near my DAC / preamp a 'move up' for me ?
I'd like to move away from apple / I-tunes.
Is it easy to transfer the tracks from I-tunes at my desktop to the Id ?
what about future music purchases, where will I buy ?  How will they end up on JRiver at desktop ?  and on Id

There is a lot here but where you might start...
Are your iTunes rips lossless? That's not the default, you would have had to customized the encoding in iTunes.
Are your iTunes tracks protected? Older ones are, newer ones not. Only Apple apps can play protected iTunes tracks.
To transfer tracks you connect the Id as a network share and drop the albums however you want to organize them into the media share on the Id.
You can purchase anywhere you want, I have tracks from Apple, HDTracks, Acoustic sounds, Amazon and my own rips but it's up to you to copy them onto the Id over your network.

All audio tracks are AAC.  I have purchased from I-tunes about 800 tracks, some (don't know how many) say that they are 'protected'.

Those protected (likely AAC .m4p) files can't be played in Media Center, only iTunes, because of the FairPlay DRM being used.

Apple used to have a program to exchange protected files for unprotected ones.  Try Google.

I confess that I haven’t read all through this long topic, so please indulge my just asking something that may already be addressed:  If I already have NUC hardware, is there an SD card version that I can purchase that includes both the Linux distro and the MC application?  I suppose I could figure out how to install Linux, configure it, and install MC, but my Linux experience thus far is limited to following instructions, so a turnkey version like you offer for the Pi would be really comforting.

EDIT:  Just saw another thread that suggests this no longer is an option and that I would need to buy a NUC from you if I want a turnkey solution.  My NUC is a 2020 model (NUC10i7) and has some upgrades, so I don’t want to toss it just yet. I guess I’d need to get a Linux distro and install and configure MC manually.

I have a model DN2820FYK NUC id that I purchased in February 2015.  It ran up until a couple of weeks ago, and then quit.  I cannot get any response from it beyond a lit power button and a running internal fan.  No image comes up on the monitor, and the usb mouse and keyboard LED's do not come on.  It's like the usb ports are dead.

This unit is discontinued and as near as I can tell replacement parts are no longer available.

Has anyone experienced similar problems or know of any way to bring this thing back to life?

I am running my Id NUC6ACYH in my main Hi Fi system, version 26.0.107 and it is now unable to play Radio Paradise giving me an onscreen message "There is a problem right now. Playback cannot be started."  MC28 on my MBP plays Radio Paradise fine.

Cloudplay plays fine on the Id as does my music library.

You might try opening it up and reseating the memory stick and the SSD.

If that doesn't work we have used ones you could get at a discount. The hardware would be newer and the MediacenterId version would be a current MC28. If you are interested contact:

I did remove the SSD and checked it in another computer.  It did boot the computer & bring up the Linux menu, but won't work in the NUC.  Looks like it's time to put it to bed.

Will a Raspberry PI with Linux do the same music server function as the Linux NUC?  I am also interested in streaming jpeg images from a NAS to my TV.  Will a Linux NUC or Raspberry PI do that?

Yes it will. The main difference you'll see between a Pi and a NUC will be with regards to video.
The NUC will be far more capable for video.
Also a NUC will be much better handling multichannel DSD audio if it has to be resampled.
If those two don't apply to your situation, a Pi should work fine.

My audio files are 2 channel.  Some are hi resolution 192/24.  I may acquire some DSD in the future, but I don't plan on needing resampling. So you're saying the Pi would handle that with no problem.

My other question is whether a Pi or NUC could take jpeg files from a NAS drive and feed them to a TV?  Could the NUC or Pi simultaneously stream audio to my DAC and jpeg to the TV?

A Pi4 could handle that fine. Probably even a Pi3b.

It's pretty odd. It works in newer MC. I thought it might be the system certs but it isn't.
I'm not sure there's anything that can be done other than updating the Id which can't be done OTA if it's running a MC26 build.

Thanks for investigating Bob.

I thought that could be the issue with the NUC6ACYH Id only capable of running to MC26 but as it is such a superb device for playing my music library I will probably delay upgrading to a newer Id until MC26 loses other functionality.

I have a very old NUC (not a JRiver Id version) that I've been using since 2014. Last night I discovered that it's bricked - the same symptoms you describe. I started looking at solutions and alternatives, found your post, and registered here for the first time to ask about the Id. I got 8+ years of decent service from the NUC, and was wondering when it was going to die.

Following up on my last post, I'm hoping that someone can confirm that the current version of the Id 300 will work as a direct replacement of my dead NUC, with the same configuration and features that I've been enjoying for years. Please forgive my ignorance, as I'm not super tech savvy and I have absolutely no experience with anything other than Windows systems.

My current setup and use cases are as follows: NUC connected to HT receiver via HDMI cable; USB drive with all my FLAC files connected to the NUC; universal Logitech remote control used to control Media Center in theater mode; wireless keyboard/touchpad used to control Windows on the NUC as needed. To be honest, I only use Windows on the NUC when updates (to Windows or Media Center) are needed, for troubleshooting and configuration settings, and to move FLAC files from a USB stick to the external USB drive, which I keep plugged into the NUC.

I only use Media Center for audio playback, usually from the HT receiver, but occasionally used as a server via Wi-Fi for playback on mobile devices using Gizmo. When playing from the HT receiver in my media room, I like to see the theater mode screen and use the Logitech remote to navigate. I rarely rarely use Gizmo in the media room to navigate Media Center.

So . . . I assume the Id 300 will work as described above. Am I correct? Thanks very much.

You scenario looks to fit well. There are only a couple of items I have questions about.

One is the transfer of the files to the Id. We setup the Id as a smb/cifs/nfs server so you'd normally copy files to it using that method. It probably can also copy from a USB stick, you'd need to use the rename, copy, move function of MC on the Id to do it that way I'd think.

The second is the remote. I'm not sure that yous will work with the Id. Can you give some more details, like the model number?

Thanks for the speedy reply. I appreciate it.

Regarding your first comment (again, bear with me as I'm not familiar with networking protocols and non-Windows stuff), I am definitely not married to moving files from a USB stick to the NUC. That's just the way I've done it because it's easy and quick. If the Id appears in Windows File Explorer, and all my FLAC files are stored in a USB hard drive attached to the Id, will I still be able to drag and drop files onto the USB hard drive?

Regarding your second comment, I have a Logitech Harmony 650 remote. It's worked great with my old NUC, which has an IR sensor. I only use it for basic navigation (arrow keys) and standard player controls. Not sure if it makes any difference, but my existing (now dead) NUC was running Windows 10. As mentioned above, I use the Logitech remote control in theater mode. If I'm honest, that's not really a dealbreaker or a requirement, if Gizmo on my android devices will work to control the theater mode, too.

Yes, that will work exactly as you are saying.

Not sure about this one, I'll see if I can dig one out to test.
JRemote on iOS remote works great. I assume gizmo on Android will work the same.

I just received the Idpi sd card. Should there be a registration code included? I got the card and invoice, didn't find any info in regards to license or registration.

There should have been a registration code included with the card. If you can't find one included, you can contact Deanna at JRiver and she can give you the license key.

Your license/registration code was sent via email on 15-March and again two times a few minutes ago.  Check your junk/spam folder.

I have been running a Linux version of Media Center 28 on a Raspberry Pi 4b for about a month.  Lately the artwork was not coming up on my tablet, so I decided to try a reboot.  I closed Media Center and brought up the menu and entered option 98 for a reboot.  After seeing scrolling text, it stopped with the following line:

[ OK ] Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes.

It appears to lock at this point.  I need help to get it to reboot.

Is this a recent IdPi? It's not clear from your post.
If so, it sounds like it didn't shutdown all the way.
Have you tried to power-cycle it?

It is a new Raspberry Pi I got from Microcenter.  When I inquired with JRiver, Deanna indicated they didn't have any available.
I did receive the Micro SD card from JRiver on Feb 22 and had it running by about the next day.

After the boot sequence appeared to stop, I did power it off and restart it. I got the same results when I restarted it.

Do you have any external drives connected to it?

It seems like some of the new hardware could require a couple of updated boot files but you say this Pi was working previously so that shouldn't be an issue.

Do you mean an external USB drive? I do not have any of those connected.  The connections are Cat5e, USB mouse, USB keyboard, HDMI monitor, USB C power, and that is it.  When I first got it running, I used the menu to mount a NAS drive so it could build libraries and see the music files.

When I first powered up after installing the Micro SD card, I followed the instructions to enter the license key and that worked fine.  Then I mounted the NAS, let it populate the library, and it was running.
