JRiver as a PVR - possible feature request?
« on: September 01, 2014, 11:18:11 pm »

OK - to start with I just installed a Hauppauge WIN tv tuner 2255 in my HTPC tonight.  So I can't say I have tried all the possible options.

First off, after installing the card and drivers, it worked right off the bat with its own software.  Then, on to JRiver.  Found television, worked through the guided setup.  Wow.  Installed perfectly.  Hats off to the JRiver team.

And, it appears to work pretty darn well.  I did a couple of shows, set them up to record the series, and it seems to do it.  Not sure whether it is better to record in JRiver's format or TS format.  Perhaps some others can weigh in.

My question, and possible feature request, is in looking at the series recorded.  I don't see a way to give priority to one series over another, in the case of recording conflicts.   I also don't see a way to limit the number of shows recorded for any single series.

I guess I am looking for Directv functionality, and I think we are close here.

I work with .ts format because it's generic and works with editing conversion software.

I'm on the hoof right now, so it's a bit hard to go into detail but there is a recording priority drop down selection option in one of the dialogue boxes when you set up a recording job.

Have a look and you should find it..  ;)

MC works pretty well as a PVR. It replaced my Topfield PVVR nicely. Not perfect yet, but getting there.

There are five priority levels you can assign to any recording, including a Series Subscription. You need to use the Standard View to see and edit them though, along with all the other recording rule settings.

After subscribing to a series via the Guide, switch to "Standard View" (Ctrl+1) , go to "Drives & Devices", "Television", "Recording Rules", click on the rule for the series subscription you just created, click on "Configure Recording". Select "Subscription Options" if it isn't already selected, and move through the dialogue windows by clicking next. The third windows has the Recording Options, including the Priority and recording retention rules (Cleanup Mode).

I use the MC jts and jtv recording format. I found a good write-up somewhere comparing the two and decided not to use the ts format, at least initially. I should review that again because there are advantages to the ts format, but from memory the jts and jtv formats give you more capability when it comes to Time Shifting, and in particular saving a whole program from the time shifting buffer, well after the program has started.

I can't find that write-up quickly right now, but if you search the Wiki and Forums I'm sure you will find it.

I found the way to manage subscriptions - thanks to the above for their advice!

However, when sorting the list by priority - shouldn't the list go from low to high, rather than alphabetically?

I didn't notice that as I have enough tuners so that I have not had to worry about setting priorities, but yeah, those values need a numeric prefix from 1 to 5 so that they sort correctly.

Just another little thing to add to the list of improvement opportunities.
