My Dad
« on: August 07, 2014, 03:05:14 pm »

Today I found out my dad 80+ years old, who also has Alzheimer's will need to get a pacemaker.

he don't really understand what's wrong with himself, (he gets dizzy), or even that he needs a pacemaker, or is going to have an operation.

I am glad I went home to see him and my mom this year.

It sometimes is hard to see your parents like this.

Yeah.... We're going through much the same currently with my grandmother.  Sad, and terrifying, in nearly equal parts.

I do not look forward to those days with my parents.  After dealing with her own mother for the past few years, my mom now has a common refrain of "If I ever get like this, just take me out back and shoot me."

In an episode of The West Wing I remember about the subject, they referred to it as The Long Goodbye.  I think that's appropriate.

I can say, though, there is some amazingly promising Alzheimer's research happening right now.  Unfortunately, they're certainly still at the basic research stage, so clinical trials (if it gets that far) won't be for way too long to help anyone suffering right now.  However... If you are a mouse (and, yes, mice get Alzheimer's too), there's a good chance you can be cured right now.  That is a Very Good Sign for the future.

I talked to my sister today

she is a LPN (nurse)

I found out his heart rate was 40 wen, thur was 37, today was 36

they put him on blood thinner.

they are trying to find out if he has any blockage, and preventing blood clots.

it took 2.5 hours to do a test today since his heart rate was so low it was not working too well.

It is very hard to hear of this unfolding.

My Sister Is A registered Nurse, In New Jersey, and she sent me some information today

Nothing was found abnormal on the Cardiac CAT scan.

Dr. said dads heart is in fantastic condition for his age.

Minimal plaque buildup

The atrial fib is another story.  B/P good but heart beating 34-40 per min.

Sometime next week Dad should be getting a pace maker.

They went over the procedure with dad today & showed him the different ones they use. (dr will use one that will fit his needs)

The Dr. schedules his own surgery times with the hospital so I'm waiting for a call on when this all is going to happen.

Well the operation went fine

Dad is HOME!

Pulse running up around 80
He took out the IV port before the nurse got to him
He got dressed and was ready to go before they told him he could go...lol

He needs to keep left arm down for at least 48 hours to allow for placement healing.
Still a bit dizzy (they said that is normal for a couple of days)

He looks GREAT!  Not ashy grey.

They all liked him in the hospital.  Said it's wonderful to have someone with a sense of humor... lol

That's it for now... hugs, deb
