Does the nfo file have exactly the same name as the video file that it's for? Does your video file have an associated sidecar.xml file?

Ok, that rules out two obvious possible issues.
Next: Are the video files imported into your MC library already?
If so, can you find them in MC?

Are the NFO files in XML format? (I'm not an XBMC user, but I understand that NFO files can contain a URL to look up, or be plain text.)

In any case we currently only support NFO files that contain xml data.  Non-xml URLs are not supported.

Under Options/General, is Store tags in external sidecar files enabled for video (needs a checkmark).
Is Update tags when file info changes enabled?

If you just want the file names to show up as titles, you can select the [name] tag and rename it:
=[filename (name)]

Try re-reading the thread I linked to above.  I believe the nfo files are read when MC imports the video.  You can probably force MC to re-read them by using one of the Library Tools.  It's probably "Get [something] from file info".  You might want to set up a test library with some duplicate files to play around with it a little.
