Difficulty viewing files on NAS
« on: September 20, 2014, 02:17:53 pm »

I recently got a QNAP TS-251 NAS. The QNAP NAS came with a Multimedia folder (share) already installed, and I added a Music folder inside the Multimedia folder to store my music files. When I use my laptop computer where MC20 is installed to try to view the files on the NAS by selecting Drives & Devices/Explorer/Network, then selecting the network name, then selecting the Multimedia folder, and finally selecting the Music folder inside the Multimedia folder, MC20 gets to the Multimedia folder and stops. A few times it's gone to the Music folder and displayed the albums there, but more often than not, it hangs up on the Multimedia folder. On another computer still running MC19 it drills down to the Music folder and displays the albums there with no fuss. What am I doing wrong with MC20?

Did you try MC20 on the machine that works?

It could be slowed down by antivirus software checking each file.

Why not just import the whole directory into MC and browse through Audio in the tree?

I have not tried MC20 on the machine that works; what good would that do? I'm much more concerned about getting my laptop to work, since it's my main server.

The antivirus program is the same as before and has never caused a problem.

I don't understand your suggestion about importing the directory at all.

Installing MC20 on the working PC would let you rule out if it is a difference between versions or not. If you installed MC20 on the working machine and the files still navigated correctly, you could start comparing settings and any differences between machines. Are both your machines connected to your LAN the same (hardwired vs wireless)?

Please see the link called "Getting Started" in my signature.

Installing on a second PC should give you a clue about what's wrong.  If it works, you know it's something about the first machine that is causing the problem.

That an antivirus program worked with one version isn't a guarantee that it will work with another.

OK, I tried installed MC20 on the other computer. Made no difference--it still accesses the network folders pretty fast. Both computers run the same antivirus program.

Let it run on the one that isn't working.  It may just be slow.

Double check the av and firewall.

It ran for well over an hour, and finally showed the subfolder where my music files are stored. That's useless. Which was my original problem.

I have a new version of the A/V I was just about to install. I'll try that.

Running an antivirus on every media file you open isn't a good idea.

Import the files.
