JRiver at 100% Again
« on: September 22, 2014, 09:20:25 am »

We're at full strength again, as of today.  Matt had his last therapy sessions last week.  He's done, and we're really glad to have him back full time.

For those who missed it, Matt had a case of pneumonia after Christmas.  It let to a trip to Urgent Care, where he fainted, fell backward, and broke his skull.  He spend the next three weeks in Intensive Care fighting for his life.  He didn't speak for a couple of months.  He had to learn to walk again, and it wasn't easy.

Every step of the way, he got a lot of support from his family, his parents, and everyone around him.  It was painful for all of us.  We could see progress, but we were never sure where it would lead.

Now, I'm very happy to say that Matt is himself again.  He's the same great developer, and the same clown who taped my mouse to my office ceiling when I was out of town a few years ago.

Welcome back, Matt!

I'm glad those days are behind us.

Get Well, Matt

It's so great to be back!

I was worried there'd be a hole in my thinking about Media Center problems (because they said I might not be able to tie my shoes again!).  But I've solved several really deep problems without a hitch.  It feels great!

Thanks everyone :)

Just a tip for anyone else: Jim does not take pranks like taping his mouse to the ceiling well.  I thought it was hilarious, Jim thought it was terrible.  I think he holds a grudge to this day.  Live and learn :P

It was incrediable to see all the support that Matt's family, friends and JRiver gave Matt during this ordeal. I was elated to see Matt's first post after getting back, and still appreciate every post of his a little more now.

 ;D

100%? JRiver may be at 100%, but a recent Analysis has Matt at 105% True Peak. ;D Glad to have you back.

Jim probably didn't appreciate the mouse droppings on his keyboard.

I'm very happy that Matt is 100% recovered !  (I was really worried for awhile there.)

The best type of prank is when it is righteous retribution.

Back in my college days, some of the guys in the dorm liked getting the morning newspaper and so a few of them shared a subscription.

One of the guys went home for the weekend... and took the shared newspaper with him.  :o

When he came back on Sunday night, he found his dorm room filled all the way to the ceiling with crumpled newspapers.  ;D

I'm sure it was absolutely terrifying.

It is so unbelievably good to have you back.

Just a tip for anyone else: Jim does not take pranks like taping his mouse to the ceiling well.  I thought it was hilarious, Jim thought it was terrible.  I think he holds a grudge to this day.  Live and learn :P

Good to know.

Once at a conference* I went to a fantastic little joke session.  Earlier in the conference, two of the instructor/presenters we're doing this little "rapid fire" tips and tricks session (it was supposedly about Final Cut Pro, but really went into all sorts of applications and OS settings and workflows and stuff).  They somehow got a bit sidetracked on pranks, and one joked that they should do a "Pranks Session".  So, then they did (later in a hastily added end-of-day session)...

And we had a good old "Tips for the Spiting of One's Enemies" session.  There were a ton of gems in there.  Apple's accessibility functions are rife with delicious and confusing fun.  And, the entire OSX speech engine too.  This one's a classic:

Code: [Select]
curl -s http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/2701/pg2701.txt |say &
If you can SSH into their computer, or you have your own account and fast user switching enabled, this one is even more brilliant because you can start it and they'll see no evidence from within their own account.

* Actually, this was the same conference where I met Jim!

You made us very worried for quite a while there.

But it had to be done. Now he (everyone) knows you're back and fully recovered.

PS. Get a flu shot this year  ;)

That's great Matt! Felt like it was touch and go for awhile there, following that blog they set up for you. I know it must have been scary as hell

What a relief, right??!!!

Matt this is great news. I, like many, followed your progress on a daily basis. We were deeply worried for you, but your recovery was a text-book one. By that I mean that it was long and difficult, with ups and downs, but your efforts were ceaseless as were those of your family, friends and support staff. You hit milestones on a regular basis and our hope grew weekly.
To be honest, I did not know that you were not back at JRiver full-time until just recently. With your increased forum presence, I had assumed it was at least a few weeks ago. I know that all the difficulties are probably not over completely and there may still be 'before and after' differences. I hope the negative impact of those can be minimised. You've done a fantastic job, and your employer and colleagues impressed many of us throughout the ordeal with their conduct. I will be buying MC21+, even if 3D and native ATMOS decoding is never implemented, just to support these fine people. :)

Finally, Brooke deserves a medal! Her frequent updates for us on CaringBridge kept us all abreast of what was going on, despite how incredibly difficult it was to see you so impaired at times. I've been thinking that she should recompile all the entries she made into a single record of the whole experience. I would read it again, and I would even read it out aloud to my daughter when she's just a little older - to serve as an example of perfect humanity. You are a lucky husband and father, Matt.
