Synchronizing the Media Center Library with the iTunes Library
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:16:12 am »

Any tips on synchronizing the Media Center Library with the iTunes Library on a Mac?

I've been using using MCiS which works great on a PC but it does not work on a Mac.

Surprise a team Beta member gets no response. I posed this question awhile back, though by " sync"  I questioned whether, having ripped in MC, files could then populate ITunes ?

My 'master' iTunes library still lives in Windows so I can use MCiS.  It would be fairly easy to write a program for the Mac since iTunes on the Mac is highly scriptable.  I thought about it at one point, but since my master library for MC is also still in Windows and I have a 1 year old sucking away any free time, I am passing on doing anything for now.

I think MrC made a script to convert from one to the other, but there's nothing I know of for sync.

Yes, it certainly would be possible to do it with the iTunes API and the MCWS API.  But I don't, unfortunately, have the time or the need.

Well, I think an auto backup to Tunes has merit, especially when one or the other is somehow corrupted. If it worked coming over from ITunes, the reverse could prove beneficial, and executed well, should be seamless

Agreed.  I'd like for one to exist, but I don't have the time, personally.

(To be clear, I don't work for JRiver, I'm just an admin on the forum.  I have a job.)

I could write a sync utility myself in my spare time.  Honestly, I've been mulling it over as an excuse to play with Swift.  But I'm not super-motivated because I don't happen to need it myself, and I think it would be a ton of work (I'd have to write a framework to communicate with MCWS from scratch, and then figure out the iTunes API).

I don't know.  It could happen, but I'm not super motivated because I personally don't really need it.  Plus, if MrC comes back he could probably whip something up in Perl in an afternoon.

Maybe we could convince prod to buy a Mac.

He would then be motivated to write a Mac version of MCiS. :)

I don't think it's going to happen, unless by a third party.

I simply can't understand how an executable file from Tunes to MC, can not be reversed. Is this an ITune's store protocol problem ie, libraries/files can only be exported ?

Not sure what you are asking.  As has been previously stated in this thread, there are existing API's for importing and exporting data from both MC and iTunes.  What is lacking is an OSX tool to write to iTunes directly from MC or to keep the two programs in sync.  There is such a tool (MCiS written by a third party) for Windows.  Until a third party writes one for OSX, that capability will not exist on that platform.

Thanks Bart. MC , like other players, imports the ITunes library initially. Now that MC allows ripping, it has no need for such libraries from outside ? I did not realize MC could stand on its own, in OSX. Confused.

MC is completely stand-alone, it doesn't need iTunes for anything.  MC can import and play media from anywhere accessible from your Mac.
