Good news and bad news for JRiver.

As of September 18th, Arcsoft pulled the plug on Total Media Theater in a somewhat abrubt way.
http://www.arcsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12331&title=did-arcsoft-drop-total-media-theater

This will bring additional customers to our preferred media player (the good news), but how will people be able to grab a copy of dtsdecoderdll.dll ?  (that dll is required for DTS-HD MA decoding by JR)

As I am a legit owner of TMT3, 5 and 6, I am personally ok, but new users may face a hard time.  And as TMT was a licensee of both Dolby and DTS Inc, making dtsdecoderdll.dll available for download will not be legit...

JRiver uses LAV Filters. LAV Filters will soon have DTS-HD decoding without the dtsdecoderdll.dll file. From Hendrik last month:

PS:
DTS-HD MA decoding is coming natively to LAV. Maybe this year if the developer of that feature hurries up a bit, otherwise soon after.

For the meantime... That DLL is available everywhere.  The Internet does not forget so easily, so I doubt there is any serious concern anytime soon.  But, of course, I too was excited when I saw that post from Hendrik.

(Note, if you didn't catch it, Hendrik is the developer of LAV in question, so he was goading himself.)

I didn't see the news about ArcSoft and TMT.  Wow.  That's really too bad.  There's probably a bunch of developers and other employees looking for work right now.  That's sad for them and their families.  It does certainly indicate that Jim and Matt might just know what they're doing with regards to not going the licensed route. There's only one left standing (and not the best one, IMHO).  That cost, and the restrictions, had to be a giant weight around their necks.

On the other hand...

Matt and Jim?  There might be some developers out there with deep experience in multimedia playback software looking for a contract gig right now.  Just saying, if Hendrik is too busy and you could just get the guy (or gal) who wrote dtsdecoderdll.dll.  Or, you want to actually do 3D?  Or support menus?  Well, then, it might let Hendrik work harder on that video engine.  ;)

Unfortunately no. The .dll is all over the place. It will push these to PowerDVD14. JRiver users as myself need TMT as BD external player only because of full menu support. Red October is superior to TMT with SD material...and if JRiver would offer full menu support (no debate here on why this might never happen) THEN these people would come th JRiver.

Not sure I totally agree with that. Many people use TMT or PDVD even though they don't care about menus, or only think they do. Many of them just don't know other solutions exist such as MPC, and MC.

I do remember something like that from when I 1st started using MC18. I have since installed MC 19 & 20 but did nothing to make sure the file is still present. I completely forgot about the issue.

Arcsoft lost the lawsuit with Dolby.   http://investor.dolby.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=648633   and here is the legal version from lawzilla.  http://lawzilla.com/blog/dolby-laboratories-licensing-corp-v-arcsoft-inc-2/     I am not sure it be wise to hire the former developers of that dtsdecoderdll.dll.

Bluray menus are the most requested feature on this forum.   The better way would for JRiver to develop a hardware device with a better interface, but it be officially licensed.   Similar to Dune HD or Zappiti Player.
http://www.zappiti.com/zappiti_player_muse_edition.html  Consumers want just a simple user interface, and the device to be stable.   Dune gives the BD menu's and so does Zapitti.  JRiver could offer both business models, but most people would end up buying an out of box solution than software version of JRiver.  Another advantage of going to hardware box is home automation companies would be willing to develop a driver for it.

If the software were "officially licensed" there would be protections in it (like Cinavia) preventing it from working with ripped movies - so a lot of current users would flee. IMO

I will throw in some speculation.

TMT hasn't really been developed for a couple years now.
Version 6 was a 10 dollar upgrade that was no different than version 5 other than the updated encryption keys for new discs.
Kind of like they just wanted to cover maintenance costs.

Version 6 is terrible. It has/had serious bugs that were not fixed in a timely manner. Like giving windows a 3 minute start up time when using a SSD.
The bugs weren't fixed because all of there development time was spent on their versions they make to bundle with drives and new PCs.
I suspect this was the problem. Tablets don't have optical drives and many (most?) laptops don't have them now either. If they do it's usually just DVD.
If Blu-ray format isn't dead (which it is), their optical drives are.

So I'm guessing they failed because they abandoned their actual users to develop software to be bundled with drives that no one is buying.
It's worth noting that Cinavia was implemented right before version 6 came out which also couldn't have helped.
Users had to start using Anydvd for the Cinavia fix just to play their ripped discs.
Once Anydvd was needed, it gave TMT users the ability to use a better non licensed player.

It's like the comic strip where you either break DRM from the start or wait till you are forced to later just to have access to your media.
Either way it happens.

Just three more to go.
Maybe Blu-ray mastered in 4K will save them. (It won't)

Again, just speculating.

The "rumour" is that Slysoft's owner might close the company, so he can start a new business with Internet Gambling.  The owners of DVDFab "China" is putting up a new casino on Antiqua  http://www.pokernews.com/news/2014/06/chinese-investors-build-casino-antigua-and-barbuda-18547.htm.  Might be 1 Billion...  http://news.yahoo.com/china-spend-1bn-massive-caribbean-resort-053226151.html

Yup!  Keep digging and you might find it.  30K is like a traffic ticket to him.

If you have your JRiver computer connected to a receiver, via HDMI, capable of decoding the DTS stream, then would you still need the Arcsoft TMT dtsdecoderdll.dll?

No, if you are bitstreaming then you don't need the .dll file
