HDHomeRun initial setup Video quality
« on: September 26, 2014, 10:17:55 pm »

I just setup my HDHomerun and i found it looked very different than the viewer they supplied.

I found that the interlacing was not as good as the HDHomeRun viewer. However it seemed they are dithering the image to get their results.

I set my interlacing to film instead of video to get the right colors back.
It was very difficult to compare two outputs. JMC was so much cleaner image. But this created anti aliasing artifacts.  Sometimes JMC looked better sometimes theirs looked better.

I tried an upscale option. I did not see a real improvement.
However i did see something that was interesting. When applying some setting, I saw the video change from the previous to the current setting. And I thought I saw it look smoother as it transitioned.

But it's hard to tell if i'm getting something real or not.

Is there anything else i can do to improve the alias or interlace issues?

I tried that. It was hard to tell the difference.

I almost tried all the madVR scaling settings. But i couldn't find anything as aggressive blurred as what they were using.
If i can. I'll try to find out what they use.

On the positive side i do think the JRiver looks better. Once i forced it to Film.
The wiki says this:
"Film mode will activate IVTC for interlaced video if madVR detects that it is natively 24/25p content"
So i'm trying to figure out why it choose video.

I'm also trying to understand more and see if i can do something about the aliasing.

Also try hardware acceleration in MC settings.  Toggle it both ways.
