Pink Floyd ...
« on: October 01, 2014, 03:19:52 pm »

http://www.pinkfloyd.com/theendlessriver/

I am wondering whether to pre- order the DVD (48kHz/24bit) or the Blu-Ray (96kHz/24bit)..
Which of these (if either) do you think will be able to be ripped and played from MC?

Why shouldn't both variants be able to be ripped? I think there's also a preorder at Qobuz for a download. Chances are, that it will Be the same Master/hi res version.

I was thinking that there may be copy protection or other hindrances why (say) the Blu-Ray might not be rippable whereas (say) the DVD would be rippable.

If the bluray isn't immediately rippable it would only be a matter of time before it is.

I'd personally go with the bluray if I wanted it.

Or just get the download (that is of course if you're interested only in the music): http://www.qobuz.com/fr-fr/album/the-endless-river-pink-floyd/0825646202577

With the download costing $3 more than the physical (LOSSLESS) CD, why would anyone wish to buy the (lossy) download?

Good reason for downloading but fails to justify the inflated price or reduced quality.
In reality a loss-less download should be about half of the CD price and lossy discounted due to bandwidth savings.

I am all for saving the environment (even at a slightly increased cost), but I refuse to feed the corporate monsters more undeserved treats than they already steal in the name of profits.

but back on topic:
I pre-ordered the CD and am anxious to put on my cans and give a good listen.

Am I missing something? Where is the download stated as lossy? I see that the hires version is $3 more than the redbook version but I don't see any lossy options.

Shouldnt hires automatically be lossy? A hires mp3 wouldn't really make sense, right? So it should be flac or wav or aac...

What?
He mistyped "lossy" for "lossless";  He's agreeing with you, I think, by noting that it wouldn't make much sense to have a 24 bit mp3.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I do not get why the Hires version is more expensive than the redbook version though. All formats should be priced equal in my opinion..

Indeed. And the physical set consists of 2x CD with 44100Hz 16bit 2Ch plus either a DVD with 48000Hz 24bit 2Ch and 5.1Ch or a Blu-Ray with 96000Hz 24bit 2Ch and 5.1Ch. Not to mention the videos and extras and stuff.
