Sabrent WiFi Audio Receiver, A Cheap DLNA Audio Renderer
« on: October 16, 2014, 04:19:39 pm »

Been looking for a cheap audio only DLNA renderer to distribute audio around the house. Nothing audiophile. Decided to try the $30 Sabrent WiFi. Apparently it also works with AirPlay but I don't even know what that is.

Have been using it about a week with JRiver and its been pretty smooth. Doesn't work with flac but wav and mp3 up to 48KHz work fine. Haven't tried m4a or syncing zones yet. Setup took some effort.

Connecting to my home network was easy. The device is always broadcasting it's own WiFi. I connected to its WiFi on my laptop which is open by default. Went to 192.168.168.1 and then updated the firmware. After applying the current firmware I had to do a hard reset and then everything worked correctly. At this point you need to turn on security. If you don't, anyone will have access to your home network once the Sabrent is connected to it. After security is enabled I then connected it to my home network. Connected my laptop back to my home network, launched JRiver and it was listed under zones and playing now.

About the only issues I have seen is JRiver will freeze sometimes when seeking on long (70min) flac files. Samething sometimes happens when playing to gizmo so I don't think it's the Sabrent.

Will update if I run into any issues. On Amazon, you can see a lot of people have problems, mainly with setup.
