Consistent Error Messages

Greetings all,from Queensland-Australia (beautiful one day, perfect the next):
I keep getting various ERROR messages (see below) - Media Jukebox is immediately closed down & when I try to cancel the error message, I can't (it won't close & pressing Control/Alt/Delete won't work either) & am forced to re-boot the computer ... Does anyone have any suggestions??

Can you go to Help->System Info and copy & post what it says?

Usually when I see something like that (usually in Windows 9x) it's a corrupted system file somewhere (reinstall Windows) or bad RAM (download and run a RAM testing utility).

Do you ever get similar error messages from other programs or only from MJ?
Does this occur randomly or everytime you do a certain action?
Is there ever any common factor with these crashes?

I have the same problem (see subsequent post: MJ8 hangs during ripping.
I get the same behavior when trying to close the error message window...
I have to reboot to get going again. My "hang" occurs during ripping
(status in ripping window says "Copying...").

Reinstall Internet Explorer...get 5.5 SP2...it's the best.

Seriously. It's more than likely a screw-up in the registry somewhere having to do with IE. You could also try installing a registry fixer program, you can usually get Fix-It or Norton pretty cheap.

Also, there is a _very_ good chance it is your video card (doesn't make sense, I know...but trust me, video cards & their drivers do crazy stuff that is hard to pin down). To test, change your video drivers to basic PCI VGA (no need to change out the physical card), and remove the Nvidia drivers...see if the problem persists.

Or, you could try editing
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and delete anything that says "recent" in the Shell of folder & User Shell of folder trees. Just a suggestion that probably won't work...but it's worth a try...

Reinstalling over windows is another option. It keeps all your stuff, but can sometimes fix crap in the registry...

Above all, give feedback if any of this fixes the problem.

Yes - I would love to be able to re-install Windows 98, but when I try with my Official Widows 98 disc, it won't let me because Windows is already installed etc ... How are you supposed to fix anything if you can't re-install??

In response to your request "DOOF", below is the info you required from my System. Also at this stage I can't seem to pin down any consistencies with the Error Messages. I have found another way back into Media Player without re-booting & that is by right clicking on the desk top icon & going in thru the Media Player entry within that pop up menu. As to it being Internet Explorer - well I'm pretty sure that this happens even when I'm not connected to the net ... but I'll double check that too.

P.S. - I thought the guru's from Media Player would respond to a lot of these problem posts - but isn't this the case ... Anyone know?  Kindest Regards - Desperate - Russell - athertonbackpack@hotmail.com

      Can you let us know what MJ is doing when it crashes and burns like this and also what version of MJ you are using?

Did this problem recently start or has been there since you installed MJ?

If you want to reinstall Windows 98, move C:\Windows\win.com to another folder on your hard drive. You'll have to create a boot disk to do that.

If Win98 setup sees win.com, it won't let you install. But with it gone, it won't know that you already have Win98 on your system. If you only move it somewhere else, you can put it back later if need be.

Also, I notice you resources are down in the 52%. Do you have a lot of stuff running in the background? A lot of icons in the sytem tray (by the clock?). Low resources can cause problems like these. And there could be something running that's conflicting with MJ. Try shutting down some tasks, one at a time, and see if the problem goes away. There was another thread on here, where a couple of us went into detail about some of this stuff. I'll see if I can find it and copy the relevant parts.

There are some basic rules to a well-running system.

1. Don't buy "Bob's Super-Duper Motherboard" and expect a well running system. PC's are the one area where generic doesn't cut it.
2. Never upgrade your OS. Always do a clean install.
3. Don't install every little piece of crap software you find on Download.com. Uninstall software that causes problems.
4. Don't let your system resources get down to 30% and expect your system to run. For instance, do you really need 10,000 fonts installed to your system? Do you know that each font takes system resources whether you're using it or not? You also don't need 25 icons in your system tray.
5. Avoid beta software. Some betas are better than others, and some software affects different things. While I don't mind running even an alpha version of MJ, I sure as hell wouldn't install a video driver that was still in beta.
6. Clean the thing up once in a while. All systems get cluttered with crap no matter how much you try not to. Bad software leaves things behind in the registy, it overwrites system dll's with their buggy versions (something that XP eliminates, by the way), and generally just bog things down.

Adhere to some of those and you'll find your system running a lot more smoothly.

I'd add:

A. If you don't use it multiple times a day, don't let it occupy the tray.
B. Keep the startup clean: check and remove litter regularly.
C. Keep at least 20% (30% for a server) free HD space.
D. If you must try every little piece of crap on Download.com trying to find a good utility it helps to have an old system lying (I use an decommissioned Toshiba 133mhz laptop) to use as a sacrificial lamb. Then only install the chosen one on your good system.
E. De-activate the desktop.
