Custom Device Sync Exporting MP3s

I created a custom handheld device to sync and export my media files (FLAC to MP3).  My ratings are stored in the rating field.  However, upon importing to iTunes I noticed that the ratings did not get imported.  What do I need to do to carry the rating across?
