Non Audio Build
« on: November 18, 2014, 12:57:59 pm »

So, I need to build a computer for heavy processing work.  I built one computer with this ASUS Board. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131854]this ASUS Board.

The newer one here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132038/ still doesn't' allow for the Gen 5 Processor (I use i7-4790K now).  Do you think it's worth waiting for the new boards to come out or will there not be much difference off the bat?

I see this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132247/ with the Z97 doesn't have the updated socket.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LGA 1155 and LGA 2011-3 are completely different (and incompatible) sockets.

Z97 will work with Haswell CPUs. (LGA1155)
You need an X99 board for the Haswell-E CPUs. (LGA2011-3)

X99 is a lot more expensive and also requires DDR4 RAM.

Thanks.  After reading some of the feedback regarding the new X99 boards I think I'll wait.  I'd love to have future expansion but would rather not deal with issues while needing to use the computer.  An upgrade to what I have already will be fine.

So I built a Windows 8.1 machine.  I got it up and running tonight.  I actually like 8.1 and this machine is super quick.  I did the ASUS Formula Maximus VI MB, i7-4790K and 16GB G Skill 2400 RAM.  I'm waiting for the play fund to recoup before the video card I want.  However, I'd like to know if there is any benchmark software that anyone can recommend that I can see how it does with the MB/processor/RAM.  Can anyone point me to some free trustworthy free useful software?

I did run the JRiver Benchmark for giggles:

=== Running Benchmarks (please do not interrupt) ===

Running 'Math' benchmark...
    Single-threaded integer math... 3.455 seconds
Single-threaded floating point math... 2.124 seconds
    Multi-threaded integer math... 1.047 seconds
    Multi-threaded mixed math... 0.684 seconds
Score: 2599

Running 'Image' benchmark...
Image creation / destruction... 0.322 seconds
    Flood filling... 0.351 seconds
    Direct copying... 0.491 seconds
    Small renders... 0.951 seconds
    Bilinear rendering... 0.687 seconds
    Bicubic rendering... 0.404 seconds

Running 'Database' benchmark...
    Create database... 0.158 seconds
    Populate database... 0.929 seconds
    Save database... 0.241 seconds
    Reload database... 0.046 seconds
    Search database... 0.717 seconds
    Sort database... 0.624 seconds
    Group database... 0.618 seconds

That's good to know.  I was researching about my MB and found that there were some BIOS updates available that made it run more effecient.  I decided to run the test again...I guess it is better!
