OS Support
« on: November 15, 2014, 09:11:58 am »

Can I make a suggestion: make it more prominent about what OS's are supported on the main site. I took a quick look and didn't find it. At the very least the software/hardware requirements should be linked from the main download page. It also should not be on the wiki. This is something JRiver is publicly stating is supported and the wiki isn't only maintained by them. Makes it a lot easier for us to link to it in a post and say "tough luck" if you want further support, switch to a known supported OS...

I agree we should be specific, but it's not possible to make absolute statements about what will work.  We offer a 30 day trial so people can try MC.

Here's what is said on the Download Page:

"Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Windows Home Server"

Change it if it needs changing:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Windows_System_Requirements

Keep in mind, the Wiki cannot be edited by "just anyone".  JRiver has to manually approve new Wiki editing accounts.

So you need to have Windows Media Player installed?
I'm pretty sure I removed it from my PC a long time ago.

Not sure about that.  It was part of the old requirements put there forever ago.

MC does require some Windows Media components on Windows, and downloads them if they aren't there on first install.

It does say that, but it would be more clear if it said those were supported operating systems. Some may confuse that a suggestion.

I don't think we do.  I know this has been an issue in the past when people had an OS that didn't have them.  I believe the way they got them was to install WMC.

That might be something to be concerned about then, since Microsoft has had to sell versions of Windows without any media components in Europe since 2004.

I believe that goes all the way back to Windows XP.
