firewall / license issues
« on: November 18, 2014, 04:24:02 pm »

So I reported this previously and thought it might get fixed in a subsequent release but it hasn't.  Now, my "trial period" has expired and I need to figure this out.

I double-click on the .mjr file and launch MC20.  It says "trial period has expired" and I choose "restore license".  I enter my registration code and I get another dialog that says "There was a problem communicating with the license server".

If someone could please explain how MC is trying to communicate with the license server (IP, ports, etc.) , I could try to resolve it.

Please help.

The mjr file is an Install Key.  It lasts for 14 days.  After that you need to use your Registration Code and do a Restore.

My mjr file is only 4 days old - I'm familiar with the process.  Please explain the source of the "problem communicating with the license server" error message and I can probably figure it out if it's a network issue.

Can anyone from the JRiver staff explain the license server connection process and why it doesn't work behind a firewall?  Please help as the software is now unusable for me.

Thanks

The link I gave you above describes how it works.  Please re-read it carefully.

It doesn't require anything special.  It makes an outbound connection on port 80, which has to be open if your web browser works.

You might try it on another machine, just to see if you can learn something.

Just to give you some background - I've been doing software development for over 35 years including parts of the Linux and NetBSD kernels.  I spent many years doing network security so I *truly* understand networks and I am able to read and follow directions too :-)

Why doesn't JRiver respect the system HTTP proxy settings on Mac?

Does it work if you don't use a proxy?

It works fine for me on my home network where there is no proxy.  It does not work on my laptop at work where it sits behind a corporate firewall/proxy.  Access from that network to the outside *must* go through the proxy.

You could use the Install Key.  Just put it on a USB stick and take it to work.

If by "install key", you mean the MJR file, I already have that.  I have a valid MJR file sitting on my laptop.  When I try to install it, I get the error I've described below.  It seems that an HTTP connection is required to validate the key.

This works on Linux, may work on OSX:

Save the license file which is attached to the email you receive when you use up a restore.

From a terminal, navigate to the directory where you saved the license file and use the following command to restore your license, change the filename within the quotes to your own saved filename:

mediacenterXX /RestoreFromFile "Media Center20 Linux-YYYYYY.mjr"

Where XX == to MC's version number (ie, 19 or 20) and YYYYY == to the number in your license filename.

MC should print a line saying that the license was restored succesfully.

That worked.  Thank you and if you need help testing an application fix for this issue, let me know.
