The Quality Goes in Before the Name Goes On
« on: January 28, 2002, 06:15:53 am »

Remember the old Zenith logo:  "The Quality Goes in Before the Name Goes On".
The new marketing is "The Bugs go in, and it is sold, before it is fixed"

I saw the above quote posted here the other day, with a smiley.
It was not my post, but I thought that it was food for thought, and should not have been deleted.
I wish bugs disappeared as quickly as some posts do!!

I trust that management is not so brittle as to entertain a little jest and some friendly suggestions:
1-I would rather see the next beta delayed a few days (even a week), if that would help get 'the quality in first".
2-Does JRiver have a Quality Assurance Test program which would consist of running the software against a database of past bugs.  Is there a formal list of past bugs, consisting of a set of Keystroke/clicks>results.  I have been involve in sw testing and such a list (sometimes automated) can go a long way to achieve Zenith's old fashion way of doing things.  Why not write a keyboard/mouse-click testing driver for MJ, to automate Q/A.  Each test could allow keying in the result (if the program does not crash!!), and then go to the next test.  At the least this should reduce the all too frequent re-appearance of past bugs.

Zenith was one of the last, if not THE last, company to give up hand point-to-point wiring of their boards.
Technicians loved it because they could actually show off their knowledge and fix the boards.
As the now deleted post mentioned, the tense of Dylan/Zimmerman's 'The Times They Are A-Changin' should be updated to the times HAVE CHANGED.  At least for the software industry, marketing consists of sell the beta, then fix it.

from Zenith Radio: The Early Years 1919-1935
by Cones, Harold/Bryant, John:
"Zenith's "The Quality Goes in Before the Name Goes On" is one of the most recognized, and well earned, corporate mottos in America. Founded by two Navy radiomen in 1919, luck and the infusion of capital from a wealthy adventurer and car salesman started the Zenith Radio Corporation on a journey that would propell it to the top of the United States electronics manufacturing industry. The rise was an interesting one, the cast of high profile."   http://www.antiqueradios.com/books.shtml

"The Quality Goes in Before the Name Goes On"

Good slogan. If you purchase Media Jukebox Version 7.2, you will receive a "bug-free" (there is really no such thing) Media Jukebox. They have a method of testing their software in order to make it as bug-free as possible before it's released and their method is Beta Testing. Who does that? We do. We find and report bugs with a far more critical eye than an army of employees could. Some do get through. Most are insignificant. If a Beta Tester is persistent enough with even the minor bugs, they will be addressed. When Version 8 is actually released, it will have many more features than previous releases and have far fewer bugs than it does now. Good deal all around. I like the way they do things. Not everything but by far most things.
BTW, if you ARE [former member], welcome back, too. You were missed.

That's right.  There is no possible way that MJ can test their software on all possible computer configurations (including manufacturers, OS's, and Processors).  The best way to hit as many different systems as you can is to release beta's to the public and let them check out the performance on their indiviual setups.

I have to wonder if there are any companies out there that don't do this?

Besides game companies that is. That industry could do with a bit more beta testing.

Even Microsoft does this.

I never understood what some people saw in [former member]'s posts.

It's kinda like how some people find all kinds of deep meaning in Dali's paintings.

All I see is a bunch of droopy women.

Fine.  Just download your own new beta only once a week.

Geeesh.

It is like turning On And Off TV

The other thing is, since it is "BETA" users should wait untill an offical release if they do not want to deal with "BETA" problems.

Plus, if you'll notice, the build numbers jump by a couple now and then. So there may be a build that doesn't get released as a beta, either because it wasn't working right, or there was time to get another build done that same day.

Nice to see JRiver taking some time before making next beta available.
Good job, zenith.
Guess the court jestors KingSparta, Doofish, and Scronchy were properly dismissed.
Jestors are mostly for humor.

Guess I should have picked a boring, yet not so easily mocked nickname... like... alan. Let me guess, your real name?

Ho hum.

Takes talent to snipe a name like Doof.

I'm still all broken up over being called "Doofish". Guess I'm brittle.

And poor Scronch! Has anybody checked his house lately? Are his newspapers piling up? Maybe somebody should check on him and make sure he hasn't done something rash...

Maybe I should use a new name from now on to avoid the possibility of being mocked in the future.

How about... "Stoopid Dummy Head"?

I wasn't complaining about the beta for MJ if you look I was one of those asking JimH to bring it on out we would test it. Doof I did look at the posters in the army and they are what you want them to be but sometimes [former member] has a point most of the time it is not one that is one the subject but I don't mind reading them some times they make sense. I half to say  I am probably a brick short of a load myself.
