HDMI Output
« on: November 23, 2014, 11:01:33 pm »

HI

I live in Johannesburg where we get horrendous thunderstorms almost daily in the summer which is stuff of fried motherboards etc :-X. As storms come we unplug all sensitive electronics, so we invested in a big UPS to give us 4-5 hrs of watching/listening.

I have my PC set up with USB output to the DAC and hence to the Amp etc , and the HDMI output to the TV , a Samsung Smart TV etc

My problem is that as I have it set up I get no audio through the TV via the HDMI link. I see in Control Panel>Sound several devices , Realtek Speakers , J River MC 20 etc , but selecting any of these still doesn't get sound.

In MC Options >Audio> Audio Device I have set to the DAC , which I assume is the problem , if I changed this to Realtek Speakers I suspect it will work

Has anybody any ideas how best to handle this , I was wondering about a Zone "TV Direct" or something set up , but how do I change this on an ad hoc basis , if I set up a rule for video only etc it will over ride the normal audio / video split I already have .

Under these circumstances I am watching video in Theatre View

Cheers

What make/model is your motherboard. Are you using on board HDMI or via your GFX card. Does it support outputting audio via HDMI. Normally they will install an HD audio device and show up in the Sound Control Panel as an HDMI device. I have seen some systems where you need to go into the BIOS and enable HDMI audio and on some systems there is an option called SPDIF/HDMI. Setting this to HDMI cures it. On some older systems  and GFX cards there was an SPDIF input header on the GFX card and you connected this to the SPDIF output pins on the motherboard.

Hope this at least points you in the right direction.

Hi

A bit more investigation , I remember that until recently the TV volume output through HDMI worked , I have had this PC for about a year and I pretty sure I have had HMDI working normally.

To eliminate the HDMI the absence of an audio connection as such, as WeeHappyPixie suggested above,  I installed XBMC which I happened to have  and lo and behold the TV HDMI audio works fine

So my thoughts go back to what setting I have missed in JRiver. Could this be connected to the WDM (?) driver that appeared a few builds back.

On Control Panel . Sound I see an entry for Samsung Audio (I assume my TV) if I "test" this I get sound out of the TV

I also see an entry for J River MC 20 , which when I test I get no sound to the TV .

The other devices are RealTec speakers , none of which give me TV Audio.

Has anybody got any ideas.

In order to get around this I have had to resurrect my Mede8er which is connected to the TV on a separate HDMI input , but this is certainly a retrograde step as no doubt you will agree. The aim is one media player for all media.

All things unfortunately point to JRiver.

Unfortunately I do not have an old version to roll back to.

Help Please Guys !!!

How do I do this ??

Backup your library. Uninstall JRiver  but don't tick the boxes to remove all registry details etc. Once uninstalled go into control panel and then sound. The JRiver device should be gone. Now create a temp folder in C: I recommend this as it's easier than try explaining how to cd to your downloads folder within your profile. Save a copy of Media Center to this temp folder eg C:Temp now press the Windows key and R and you will see the run dialogue box. Enter CMD and then click ok. A CMD prompt box will appear, enter CD\ and press enter. Now type cd temp and press enter. Finally enter mediacentre20.x.x /nodriver and press enter. The. X. X in the filename is the build number for the version your installing.

There are other ways to do it however this is the easiest way to explain at the moment as I'm not at my pc to do some screenshot. If your stuck just say and I'll do a walk through for you in the morning. It's 23.45 in the UK and for now it's beddy time for me..

I had a problem getting HDMI to work yesterday.  It turned out to be a switch setting in the receiver.  HDMI was off there.

Hi

My tv is fine, I installed another media player just to test this tv audio worked fine

This is only an issue when I am trying to run audio to the TV with no amp

In thunder storms I use a ups to run pc and TV but not the amp, it wouldn't last too long.

If it works with another player, there are two possibilities:

1.  Another player is using WASAPI in Exclusive Mode.  That's what it means.

2.  Your audio setup isn't correct.  See the wiki for information.

Hi

I went through the wiki set up to no avail.

I finally got out of it by setting up a new Zone "TV Direct" and set that up and got it to work.

I already have an Audio & Video zone set up differently , it going to have to be a manual switch as moving Audio-> Video can have 2 states Video or TV Direct (depending on the weather  ;D) so I can't differentiate to define a ZoneSwitch

Still at least its working now.
