I used this functionality all the time in Winamp many years ago and I really miss this in MC;
for example after renaming files.

An "Automatically Remove Missing Files from Playing Now" global setting would also be helpful!

Would it work to just run Auto Import now? It's job is to take care of missing files, moved files, etc.

No, not at all; not the way I'm using MC.
I'm working with lots of temporary soundfiles and renaming them all the time;
both at work and at home.
These files are not supposed to go into the library.
