Feature Request: Embedded AAC Encoder (FDK?)
« on: January 14, 2015, 10:53:06 am »

It would be nice to include an audio AAC encoder. I know conversions can be done with the external encoder option (Works really good with QAAC but unfortunately for me on a handheld sync MC does not differentiate m4a ALAC from lossy and all my files get either converted or none at all (despite setting the "Only convert high bitrate option)...But that's something else See post: Conversion of High Bit rate files.)

I wouldn't bother with the opensource faac and go with the Fraunhoffer FDK which is open source like LAME and is of good quality.
QAAC would be nice but I assume you can't due to proprietary issues...
What if you let the user proactively get the encoder qaac.exe and put the rest in place?
But for FDK it shouldn't be an issue and could be implemented just like LAME right?

Just a thought. (Yeah I know...LAME is very good too... :)
thx

The FDK encoder isn't actually proper open-source, it has extra conditions in its license which make it rather unsuitable.
Otherwise, we do have AAC encoding for video conversion, for some reason it was just never hooked up for audio-only use-cases. Maybe we can do that.
