Windows 10 - FLAC Codec
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:17:51 pm »

Windows 10 will include its own FLAC codec.  Is there any way to configure JRiver to use this codec instead of its default internal one?

I would like to A-B them to see which I prefer.

Thanks

FLAC is transparent and lossless.  Why would there be any difference?

Why would there be any difference?

There would not be, unless one of the codecs is broken.  Since the official FLAC decoder has been thoroughly tested, we know which one would be broken if one was.

In any case, since MC is cross platform, I wouldn't hold my breath for this support.

Windows 10 will "support" FLAC natively - that does not imply Microsoft has made their own unique FLAC decoder. Since FLAC is world wide open source - MS is simply crafting a .dll to handle FLAC - using the freely available code that everyone else uses.

Therefore - no worries about it sounding different - because it won't.

The same can be said for Matroska format - Microsoft won't be recasting the entire open source Matroska codebase either. They will simply let Windows 10 Media Player fire up mkv files.

Sorry guys.  On a simple audio system you may not be able to detect a difference, but on mine, there is a major difference between different FLAC codecs and even versions of the same codec.

While FLAC is an open standard, the quality of the coder and the style of coding can and do make an audible difference.  Just because you may not be able to hear it on your system does not mean it is not there.  It is.

So, the question is this, "Is it possible to have JRiver use the native codecs on a PC vs. the ones built-in to the software?"  Simple as that.

And the simple answer is "No."

The long answer was given above, and you may believe what you want, but we'll stick to scientific fact around here if you don't mind.

Do you have some evidence that suggests that different FLAC codecs produce different file outputs?  That is to say that they aren't producing lossless copies of the original files?  If so, than you have found a defective FLAC codec, and should notify upstream about it. Lossless compression, by definition, creates a copy that is (when uncompressed) identical to all other lossless copies.  If a codec is not doing that (if there's a difference in the uncompressed output) the codec is defective.

Have you measured any differences in output from different codecs?  You might want to try using audio diffmaker to see if there actually are any real differences between the two outputs.

Sighted listening is an unreliable method of ascertaining differences, and greeting skeptics with dismissive comments about the quality of their audio setups is unlikely to convince anyone of anything.  If you have evidence (other than your ears), please proffer.

I'm guessing you haven't done double blind level matched comparisons?  If you had, you would know that your statement is false.

On another note, what makes you think everyone here has a simple system?
