Hello,

As I get started using JRiver I will have HiRez downloaded files I would like to back up. I don't really care about compression. So is PC drive along with 2 other portable hard drive backups good enough ? I also thought about 1 portable hard drive and something like Carbonite ?

Any thoughts ?

I do think having a backup outside the home an excellent solution hence use a cloud backup.
However, a backup faithfully backups all your cockpit errors.
A second one, e.g a external HD is a must.

I have an onboard local backup, and external backups. Do not forget to backup the library as well as the files themselves and make sure all important tagging fields are set to write to disk. That way you can rebuild your files from the library or the library from the files.

I keep a local backup. I upload to google music. (20,000 "tracks" for free)
And I also use crashPlan for family photos. So i'm pretty well protected.

Google converts lossless files on upload (Flac and apple lossless) to mp3. Not a good idea if your library is lossless.

I wonder what would happen if you just changed the extension to mp3.

CrashPlan and Backblaze are both good options for offsite backups.

I like Backblaze slightly more, but they're both good.

Thanks Glynor might have to do that ... its getting cheap isn't it :)Less than I'm spending for additional hard drives per year for my archive now. And Google wants 10 bucks a month for 20k worth of mp3s. Outrageous

Uploading 8 terabytes though with my connection would take, euh not sure, but a long time.

not sure what Euro prices are for hard drives Arindelle, but the $510 / year that BackBlaze costs will get me almost 16Tb in externals...

i think i must be getting old as i won't put anything on the cloud.

How many systems do you need to backup that it would cost you $510/yr o.o Its $50/yr for one system, unlimited data, and one could probably set it up easily so that all other systems backup to that system, and that system backups off-site.
My main issue is that it would take ages to upload all my media content after ripping or recording it (especially video), even more so when starting late to the game (ie. now) with a couple TB of ripped content already waiting...

i'm not into cloud storage at all either way!   but i digress; it's probably a good option for many, especially if they have smaller amounts of files (i'm with you, at around 16Tb of media right now i can't imagine the time and the issues i'd have with my ISP to upload all that)

Very limited country support, only 1TB, etc. :d
If you have 20TB to backup, 1TB less don't make much of a difference.

That post I linked is pretty old though.  I think sizes and countries have increased.  Not positive though, as I haven't looked.

Don't you guys in the real world have ungodly fast upstream bandwidth anyway?
