Which processor for JR20 and DoD upsampling ?
« on: February 02, 2015, 04:49:05 am »

Good day to all the JRiver users,

I need an advise about the hardware to choose for an Audio configuration, let's say 'audiophile' (no video)

I'm not satisfied with the  current confirguration, and intend to change for something robust.
- Computer : old laptop with Pentium single core 1,6GHz chip.
- DAC : iFi micro idsd
=> The use of DoD (single DSD option) takes about 80 to 95% of the processor, with some 'music stops' time to time....

Can you confirm to me that the following configuration would fit ?
Mac mini - intel i5 2,6GHz - 4Go RAM - 500Go HD

Can an i2 or i3 make the job ? Thas would save monney,
...or should I better go for a i7 processor ?

Regards,
Mathieu

Up ? Mac Mini is only a dual core, most of others are  quads.  ?

count yourself lucky that a single core pentium actually manages to do the job, which should tell you something!
You don't need much CPU.
If it is just music you are going to use the computer for, any windows based (cheaper) core II Duo machine with 2GB of ram should do, provided you don't have many things running in the background.
A Mac i3 should be sufficient.
I don't think there is such a thing as an i2.

Thanks for your answer,
Mac Mini i5 runs perfect for music.
I tested the oversamplig up to 8xDSD. JRiver uses max 21% of the  processor.

There you go, you used the hardest thing JRiver would ever do (8XDSD) and it uses 21% of your processor.
Under normal use with DSP active, and upsampling 44KHz to 176KHz, on my PC, JRiver uses 12% of my AMD A10 5700.
