No gapless playback of MP3 albums with MC 20.0.64 for Mac?

I can't get gapless playback to work with MP3-encoded albums. It works with ALAC albums, though. I've selected the "Use gapless for sequential album tracks" option as well as "Switch tracks: gapless". I've tried with and without memory play, but can't get gapless playback with either. The gaps between tracks get successively longer towards the end of albums.
