OT : Internet Download Managers
« on: October 08, 2003, 07:27:15 am »

Hello,

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic.  I actually am asking for a musical reason, as I've just started looking into downloading concert bootlegs and other legal recordings that are available (though not directly) through http://www.etree.org.  The files are pretty big, either in shn or flac format (which I subsequently burn to CD for archive and convert to APE for tagging and playback.)

One of the things that I think would improve this process is getting a download manager.  My requirements are fairly straightforward, however, I haven't found a download manager that I like yet.

It needs to be able to download from both HTTP and FTP hosts.

It needs to have resume capabilities.

I don't mind paying for the product if it really does perform better than free products.

If free, no-adds is best, add driven is fine if it isn't too invasive.

It should have a reasonably intelligent user interface and preferably, it should interface with MozillaFirebird.

I'd love to hear what software other people are using?  Or what ones to stay away from.

Sorry for this being off topic.

This etree site is AWESOME!!
The downloads are: free, authorized, lossless, and there is a boatload of music available.  Well worth the effort to investigate if anyone has yet to have a look-see.

I have been using FreshDownload from:
http://www.freshdevices.com/

It is free, I have found no adware/spyware packaged with it, and works very well for me.

Would the MC9 download manager not work?
If not maybe if you list what's wrong with it the GREAT MC team may be able to fix?

I asked the very same question to this forum recently.  Look here for plenty of suggestions.

My favorite is FlashGet which is free and I still have not seen any adds other than to buy the program itself.

It is very easy and reliable to use.  I set it up to download MC betas when I'm asleep, then hang up then shutdown my PC and it works without a hitch everytime.
