new desired possibilities for video settings
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:07:57 am »

Hi,

This is for MC team :-)
In the near future, would it be possible to add some features to the video menu and/or MadVr.

1 - Be able to specify output video format depending on the input video format (ex: if input is 720p, outptut is 1080p, if input is 1080p, output is 4k)

Usefull because no all graphic cards can do 720p to 4K or 720p to 1080p depending the scaling algorithm used.

2 - Be able to specify the scaling algorithms (MadVr) depending the input/output video format.

Eg: If input is 720p and ouptut is 1080p, scaling algorithm is :

Image Upscaling   Lanczos 3
Image Doubling NNEDI3@32
Chroma Upscaling BiCubic 75
...

Both (1) and (2) features would be great to customize the video part depending the customer wishes and depending it's own hardware capabilities.

regards

You can do (2) just fine using madVR's built-in profiles.

There are no plans for (1). Its also important to note that an increased scaling factor does not mean its going to need more performance.
The performance mostly depends on the number of pixels to process, which means a lower input resolution will actually run faster than a higher one. Scaling 720p to 4K should be faster than scaling 1080p to 4K, given the same algorithm in use.

Quality would suffer quite a bit as well when letting the TV upscale in addition to the PC doing upscaling once before. Its usually a much better idea to simply reduce the settings to less demanding ones, even if its only bilinear or bicubic in the end, instead of letting the TV do it.

Thanks Hendrik.

Regarding what you replied to me, looks like I can do what I need.
Output format will be set to 4K whatever the input format (who can do more can do less in term of performance).

To get things more user friendly, a user interface (instead of using scripting) would be nice ;-)

Just a quick question, is a Nvidia GTX 970 can handle 720p or 1080p to 4K upscale with the following algorithms:

Chroma upscale : Jinc 3taps
Image Upscaling:  NNEDI3@64
Image doubling: Always  / use NNEDI3 to Double Luma Resolution using 64 neurons
dithering: Error Diffusion Option 1
