unactivated component message keeps reappearing
« on: February 25, 2015, 04:06:29 pm »

This problem is repeatable every time.  I'm running both v19 and v20.  This is a central media pc typically run as a guest account.  I'm getting an information window after attempting to play a tv channel which says "this version of Media Center must be activated by running it once with at least Power User Priverlages.  After this activation, MC can be run with only guest privileges. (Unactivated Compononent c:\program files (x86)\J River\Media Center ##\TV\MUTSFileWriter.ax)"  In every case, one version will have this issue and the other will not.  I log out of the guest account, login as admin, run through a few channels on the version with the problem.  Log out, log in as the guest account, attempt to play tv and works, however the other version now has the error message and the problem persists.

Please help.

Couldn't you just switch to running MC20 only?

No.... I have very specific requirements and using separate versions makes my whole house setup much easier to automate.  Using zones within JRM does not bode well for having independent zones all using theater view.  I've used the zone functionality in years past but has always been problematic when attempting to have a complete automated system for all the zones in my house.  I've posted about this before but never really went anywhere.  Way less complicated from a coding standpoint to use a seperate version of JRM for each physical zone.  I've got a lot of time invested in setting up my house with multiple versions and my system has become much more robust and manageable now so really close just need to get this problem figured out without having to grant full access rights to the guest account.

I'll be happy to start a new thread describing the advantages of automating using separate versions for each physical zone vs. using one version with zones enabled... but for now would appreciate it if you could help me with the error message i've described.  If running more than one version of JRM is something the company won't support then please say so for the record and i'll leave this alone.

thanks.

after more hours of trying to figure this out here's more info.

setting the user as a power user as the message indicates doesn't help.  Only as administrator does the problem go away.  I've also changed permission on all jrm program folders to allow all users full access control.

Would really appreciate it if you could investigate this issue and tell me what i need to do.

thanks.

When we switch active cores, I'm looking at the code that registers everything.

It looks in the TV folder for .ax files:
ObjectList.Find(JRFileSystem::GetDirectoryInstall() + _T("TV\\"), _T("ax"));

That means the file should get registered when the program activates (the first UAC prompt).

Although the guest account is running as a standard user, I have UAC disabled.  Not sure i follow the jest of what you're saying.  Do you mean the behavior i've described follows what you're seeing in the codes or does not?  I've done more testing since my last post and here's more info for what it's worth.  I had both versions loaded and running prior to ever configuring them for tv.  Before messing with TV i did notice that if 19 was running and i manually started (i.e. d-clicked v20 icon), v19 would shutdown.... however, if i instead executed the command line mc20.exe or any other similar mc20 command which invoked it, v19 would NOT shutdown.  This behavior i could live with since my entire house is run via command lines and no direct interaction with the mouse.  That said, at some point last night during my attempt at tracking down what was causing the TV error messages, I noticed that v19 would now shutdown even when the v20 command line was invoked.  At this point i had no choice but to roll back my machine to a few days ago and whala... v19 will now stay running when v20 is invoked by command line.

Really really would like to solve this mystery and really really appreciate your help in providing me with either a workaround or solution to both the shutdown issue as well as the tv issue running multiple versions.  btw... also running v16 and v15 for other zones, v15 only being used for mp3.  These older versions do not seem to be affected by the shutdown issue.

thank you.

I found by doing a search online that jriver claims to support multiple versions installed.  If nothing else could you PLEASE tell me how to prevent v19 from shutting down when launching v20?

I'm sorry, but I think you are in uncharted waters.  We may not be able to give you the answers you would like.

That said, running MC20 should not shut down MC19.

After selecting allow multiple instances v20 no longer kills v19.  So looks like i can get around this issue.  that said, the TV power user error message has not been solved and would appear i'm going to have to move on and forget about being able to use multiple versions of jrm to run tv to multiple zones in my house.  Again, reason i cannot use 1 version of jrm to do this is tv feature requires theater view, therefore, if someone is watching tv in one zone and someone else decides to watch tv in another zone using built in zones within jrm, the first person wathcing tv gets knocked out.  If you have a work around for this i would be glad to hear it.

thanks much.

Wouldn't the solution be to have a networked TV device like the HDHomerun with enough tuners to cover several users at once?

i have 2 of those....  but this doesn't solve the problem as described.  again, using 1 version of jrm and utilizing zones, you have to use theater view to watch tv therefore if 1 zone is watching tv and a second zone starts up tv then zone 1 goes blank.

Have you tried multiple instances of MC20 rather than running older versions?

That isn't an option for me because my entire system is controlled using command lines, there is no mouse interaction.  Controlling jrm via command lines will not work in this manner since it cannot distinguish between the 2 instances of same jrm version running.

That's just not right.

I haven't followed everything you're saying, but ...

MC20 can act as a client for MC running on another PC (call it the server) using Library Server.  Multiple clients can watch video from the server.

If that's your problem, please start a new thread on the TV board, with a detailed description, including what the tuner is and which machine is recording.

I'll close this now since it has a lot of other problems mixed in.  Start new threads as needed.
