Very simple problem with what is possibly not a very simple solution: using a client that is interacting with a library server, attempting to make use of the rename, move, & copy files feature in an attempt to move files on a remote hard disk from one folder to another on that same volume (I am not trying to move or copy them to the client or anywhere else) does not move the files, nor does it offer to delete the empty folders in the original location (because, y'know, they're not empty; it's not working). I am attempting to work with BD and DVD rips in folder structure (via DVDFab). MC creates the directories in the destination location (BACKUP, META, STREAM, &c.) once I sync changes, but does not move the actual assets (the MPLS, the index.bdmv, &c.). I have set up my HomeGroup correctly and shared the relevant directories.

What do I have to do to get this to work properly?

To anyone wondering, "Why not just do it on the server?" - I have a dual-monitor setup at my server; one is a regular computer monitor, while the other is a plasma screen TV. There is no way to detach MC theatre view from standard view, like I could with display view, and drop it onto the plasma display for less risk of burn-in while I make metadata edits with the far-more-intuitive standard view on the regular monitor. I also know of no way to have MC automatically jump to the regular monitor when put into standard view, and then have it jump back to the plasma display when put into theatre view. The only time I want to take MC out of theatre view on the server is to alter MC's options; I do not want to have to sear my retinas every time I want to rename, move, & copy something, or to edit metadata, hence the client/server route. Unfortunately, it's not working as intended.

Visual representation attached (drive Z is the mapped network share).

If it is not possible, please let me know.

I think you would need to move the files by using MC on the server.

Mmm...then consider this a feature request for one or both of the following:

  • Make it possible to rename, move, & copy files on a server via a client. It really defeats the purpose of having MC running on a server exclusively in a ten-foot interface (especially on a plasma panel) to have to go to standard view to perform these operations.*
  • Make theatre view a detachable interface, so that it could conceivably be run on one monitor (the plasma panel) while standard view runs on another (the regular LCD monitor).

* The highly preferred option. Also, question: is it conceivably possible and/or feasible to allow a client access to a server's options, perhaps via some separate menu?

I've asked for this before.

+1 on #1 as well; being unable to rename/move/copy or change cover art from clients is a thorn in my side lately.

When I had a dedicated MC server running, it wasn't a big deal, I'd just remote in, but now that my server is also a playback system, remoting in isn't really a very good option.  The rename/copy and cover art limitations have me waiting until no one is using the system, then going to the other room, taking my server out of theater view, etc.

It's gotten to the point where I've started using external non-MC software to do these kinds of library tasks (even though MC is actually much better at it) because I can do it from my chair without disrupting what everyone is doing in the living room (and auto-import will pick up the changes).

Any thoughts from the dev team on the feasibility of implementing this?
