install key vs. registration code
« on: March 12, 2015, 03:36:23 pm »

The more I read the more confused I'm getting!!!!

I installed MC20 on my PC using the Registration Code that came with the receipt for purchase. Am I done now? Don't know. I got an install key in an email shortly after, saying that I have recently "restored" a licence. So the original install is called a restore?

If I installed with the Registration Code, what's the Install key for?

From what I read about the registration code: "This is a permanent code that can be used to restore your license at any time in the future." Why would it need restoring? Does this just mean to install it again? Would I need another install key also?

I also installed on my Mac and used my Registration Code. Then I got another install key. If the install key is something I click on the "install" whatever, I'd assume that same format (.mjr) isn't something that would work on the Mac.

I think the Registration Code is what I use to install, because as I recall it asks for that. I just don't understand where the restore and install key fit into this.....

can someone clarify for me?

The Install Key "installs the Registration file/code". If you ran the Install key you are done. Start the program, go to "Help>Registration Info". If the  program is correctly registered it will say "registered", and show your name.

Remember that anyone can download and install the program (it is a trial version at that time). It is after you install the "registration file" that the program becomes "owned" by you.

Even after you pay for the program and run the registration file, it is still possible that you will need to re-install it a some time (for example due to a computer hard drive failure/replacement). In this event you would use the "Restore a license" feature to get a new registration file/code.

I hope this explanation helps some.

Edited to clean up some wording.

Thank you for your reply....

On the Mac where I installed earlier today I ONLY used the Registration Code. the "Help>Registration Info" does say registered and does show my name. So apparently the Install Key I was sent shortly afterwards is completely unnecessary?

So you can either a) install the license easily just by opening the file without the need to copy and paste the key and burn through another restore and b) for use on multiple PCs (within reason, of course). Keep in mind the install key is valid for 14 days. I find the install key is easier to use when installing Media Center on multiple PCs and with the master license on multiple operating systems.

The Purchase Page explains licensing.
