Can't reinstall MC20
« on: March 27, 2015, 05:54:27 pm »

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1.  Some of my programs didn't like the switch.  CCleaner made my PC almost unusable, so I got rid of it.  Then MC20 crashed.  I had purchased an upgrade license key for MC20.  I deleted everything I could find related to JRiver.  I then attempted to reinstall MC20 using the JRiver download.  This is what happened.  I got this message (exact wording):  "Failed to load file associations.  This is a fatal error, so the program must close.  Please reinstall the latest version of the program to fix this problem.  Path: Version: Unknown."  I've made numerous attempts to reinstall MC20 and I keep getting this message.  What can I do?

Well, it sounds like the upgrade may have gone badly.  I'd recommend you consider wiping the hard drive and starting over.  For example, CCleaner is a well regarded application (I use it myself on every Windows 8.1 system I own).

However, you can try uninstalling MC completely and re-installing from scratch (it wasn't clear if you uninstalled it in your quest to delete things).

But, it sounds to me like you have OS level issues, and we likely won't be able to troubleshoot much beyond that.

I'm not going to wipe my hard drive.  All of the other programs work OK.  I installed Foobar which functions without difficulty and sounds as good as MC20 once WASAPI is enabled.  Windows Media Player also functions normally.  Frankly I find your response unacceptable.  I paid for the MC20 license key which was a waste of money.  I did remove all versions of MC and its associated files and then attempted to reinstall which was unsuccessful.  I did this several times.  I think the bug is in MC20.

Media Center is developed on Windows 8.1 and certainly is compatible with it.

You said again "you deleted", which is not the proper way to uninstall programs, so I'm not sure what you've done to the system.  Did you uninstall it via the Windows Uninstall a Program control panel?

Yes, I used the Windows uninstall program.

I really have no idea what could be causing that.  Your original description really makes me thing something went badly wrong with your Windows 8.1 update.
Did you make sure to remove and then update all of your hardware drivers before doing the upgrade?

The only other big idea I have is that you could try running the System File Checker:
