Does WDM driver support 5.1 passthrough?
« on: March 29, 2015, 11:27:19 am »

Hi

I'm using MC 20.0.87 and WDM version 20.0.87.0.

I want to use the WDM driver as the default audio driver in my HTPCand have MC downmix all movie from 5.1 to 2.0, apply night mode (compression), reduce bass levels and then output via SPDIF to my Canton DM50 soundbase.

I am playing a video with aac 5.1 soundtrack in an external player using LAV audio and video decoders. However, no matter what I do, MC only shows that it is accepting 2 channel 44.1/16bit audio. The WDM driver in window appears to offer no support for compressed audio formats and so I am guessing that windows is downmixing the audio itself before passing to to MC?

Is this expected behavior (a limitation of the WDM driver),  a possible error in my setup or a defect?

Under the output format dsp in media center have you set
-Output encoding to : Dolby Digital
-Channels : set to 5.1?
S/PDIF is designed to carry either 2 channels of uncompressed audio or a compressed multi channel audio stream such as the on the fly Dolby Digital encoding that JRiver offers.

Also check you have the JRiver WDM driver configured to 5.1 channels under the windows mixer options.

All goes well you should also see Dolby Digital light up on your receiver.

I want to use MC to downmix from 5.1 and output a stereo 2.0 (not 5.1) signal to my soundbase with some DSP within MC. (hence why I want to use the WDM driver in the first place).

Also check you have the JRiver WDM driver configured to 5.1 channels under the windows mixer options.
This is the issue, hence my comment "The WDM driver in window appears to offer no support for compressed audio formats"

If you are using the WDM driver, does it show support for compressed audio formats in windows control panel?

You need to set the Windows sound device to 5.1
Unfortunately, MC reinstalls the driver every time you update which resets those settings...

Where do I do this (sorry if I am missing something obvious here)

Ah ha!

I was being a numpty and didn't spot the "configure" option for the WDM driver. Now I have set it (and not "speakers") to 5.1, I am getting 6 channels appearing within MC.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi, while you are now seeing 6 channels I assume that's 6 channels of PCM, is this correct?
Is it possible to send compressed audio to the WDM Driver (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital True HD, DTS-Master etc.) ?

No, it does not accept compressed audio.
