HI

Maybe a bit off beam wrt MC20 , but there is so much experience out there 

I have just bought an ONKYO 838 AVR

My current Media PC is an i3 with HD3000 on board graphics. My problem is when I connect the AVR by HDMI  and hence to the TV by HDMI , the i3 fails to see the AVR as an output device.

I have rebooted with the AVR Switched on and off to no avail.

Currently I am using my old laptop , i7 with a Geforce 520MX which recognises the AVR and works fine . Except for one biggy , when I reboot the i7 with any USB devices (ie my media library) in place it just hangs , so I have to unplug any devices , boot and reinsert -- a bit painful...

I have searched relevant forms for both these issues and it seems the boot issue is well known, but without a clear solution.

I would like to revert to the i3 as a "clean" PC but I am struggling

Has anyone seen this before or does any one have any silver bullets

You could try hooking up the computer to your Onkyo directly.

I'm using a Terratec USB soundcard on my laptop and I have it attached through toslink to my receiver.

On the connect problem, make sure Media Network is on in the options.  A firewall might cause the problem.

On the USB problem, check your BIOS settings for boot order.

maybe an onboard graphics issue?  are you running the AVR / TV as the only monitor or do you have a monitor attached as well?

all of my "media" PC's have PCI cards, i don't use onboard and they all work perfect with my onkyo 929

He's talking about it working when connected to the PC's HDMI out, not anything so fancy.

You should be able to pretty much just plug the display into the PC's HDMI port, and then it'll light up the display.  If you happen to have no HDTV connected to the Onkyo, then it might not work well (depending on the GPU drivers and the Onkyo itself), it is worth mentioning.  But otherwise, plug it in, it should light up the TV.  Then, pick the HDMI output in MC under Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device.  Pretty much done.

It is possible that you cannot use HDMI and DVI outputs on your PC at the same time, if the PC is very low-end or tiny or something. I don't know for sure what device you have, but, I suspect some of them have that kind of limit.

I sort of have this configuration. I have the DVI to a 19 in vizio tv. I have the hdmi going to my Yamaha amp and the mini plug from rear sound card going into the vizio, this way i can listen to MC and if I'm brousing youtube or such i get those sounds and the pc sounds out of the vizio, now when i turn on my Yamaha the vizio flashes off twice and then I'm good to go....doing it this way lets me turn off the vizio without losing MC sound.

In order for me to get this to work correctly I do remember going to manufacturer of the sound card and getting updated drivers.

I also have a 2nd pc hooked up into the Yamaha via hdmi going to a 55 in tv but that's another story.

Thanks for the input -- To clarify

The PC that won't see the amp is a low end Lenovo B590 i3 Laptop, 4Gb Ram no extra cards etc, ie video or sound cards. The one with the video card is Samsung 300 V i7 8Gb RAM and Nvidia GeForce 520MX

The TV via the Amp is the only monitor/screen. Navigation is either Theatre View for Video or JRemote for audio.

SandsOfArrakay - I can't link direct to the Amp from the PC as it has no optical or coax out hence the reason for the new amp to get HDMI , I use USB to my DAC but that's only stereo and works fine.

Ferday - The PC in question has HD3000 graphics and no discrete video card. The one I can get to work is a NVidia GeForce 520MX card . That's maybe the hint.

Jim - There is no network involved just a pair of USB Ext HDD

Glynor -- The PC->HDMI-> TV works fine , it was doing this before the new amp as the old amp didn't have HDMI

I have since had recommendations from the Onkyo dealer , none of which worked I may add, (Use HDMI front panel, turn off RIHD (something to do with remote controls?))

The only hint is that the HDMI socket on the front panel works fine , any on the rear do not is this a Hand Shake issue whatever that is ?. This isn't really an option with cables hanging around though.

For now I am using the i7 and if I need to reboot I unplug all the USB devices until windows starts and then plug em back in -- hardly ideal though.
