Which is generally a bad idea.
I find it very convenient to have the program that handles all my media playback also be the program that gets new media.
I use the podcast feature to download new videos from several different sites daily.
If MC could do that for YouTube channels, it would save me a lot of time instead of checking 10+ channels and manually downloading any new videos that show up.
Your response is like those people that say "why use RSS at all when I can just visit the site?"
Which works if you're only checking one or two websites, and not 50.
I have sites in my RSS reader that are maybe updated once or twice a year, and I'd never know when that was if I did not use an RSS reader to automatically check the sites for new content and fetch it. Same thing for YouTube channels.
I am experiencing that right now, since I started using the same instance of MC20 that I use for audio and video playback on my HT-PC, to also record TV.
Just yesterday, I accidentally killed a TV recording because I rebooted the PC during the recording.
So, I am moving back to having a separate PC with a separate MC20 to do TV recording.
I'm not sure that I understand your point. You're still using MC to handle it, aren't you?
So this was not an issue caused by MC being capable of too much.
If you switched off your DVR while it was recording, you'd lose that as well.
The new paradigm of "your phone does everything" I also find to be a bad idea.
First there is the logistical problems of using the phone as a TV remote while it is next to your ear to talk to a caller.
Second there is the problem of getting a new model phone, which means you cannot pay for things, change TV channels, arrange for a date, take a picture or be contacted until you learn all of the new phone.
Third there is the problem of losing a hundred different capabilities when you forget your phone or have it stolen - or even more likely, run out of battery power. "Can you turn down the TV honey?" "Sorry my phone's battery is dead".
Not sure I see the relevance to this topic at all.
Your issue there is not "this phone can do too much" but "I'm trying to use the phone for things it's not well suited to".
And I think it's an interesting topic to discuss, but not here.
